- ◆It is likely that Buell was named after real-life 1861-1865 Civil War commander Don Carlos Buell. During the cutscene before "The Veteran Part III", Hamish mentions a battle where the bodies were so thick that "you could've walked across the whole field without your boots touching the ground." This was a detail noted by Union General Ulysses S. Grant in the aftermath of the Battle of Shiloh, during which Don Carlos Buell was a commander.
- ◆Hamish also mentions in the first encounter with him in "The Veteran Part I" that this is "the second time a Buell has cost him his leg", and that he's referencing the fact that his horse shares his name with Hamish's prior military commander during the battle where his right leg was amputated.
- ◆After Hamish Sinclair's death, if the player mounts Buell, they will earn honor for carrying out Hamish's dying wish.
- ◆Buell was depicted as being a Standard Horse in the Official Gameplay Reveal trailer.
- ◆Buell's name cannot be changed in the services option of the horse stables.
- ◆If the player happens to get bucked off their horse during one of Hamish Sinclair's side-missions, he will jokingly say that this happens all the time with him and Buell, too.
- ◆If the player wishes to keep Buell after the story, they must complete the final part of Hamish's mission after Chapter 6, as John. If the player completes the mission as Arthur, Buell will be lost along with all the other horses owned by Arthur after the mission “Red Dead Redemption”.
- ◆There is a similarly colored horse called the Cremello Kladruber available for purchase in Red Dead Online upon reaching rank 10 in the Trader role.
- ◆When obtained, Buell is overweight, implying Hamish overfed him.
- ◆Buell can be spawned using the cheat code "You want something new". His name will first appear as "Dutch Warmblood"; however, he will be renamed "Buell" as soon as he is stabled and cannot be renamed.
- ◆Buell can be obtained early by ramming into him on horseback while he is hitched outside the Veteran's Homestead. When struck, Buell will spook and detach from the hitching post, subsequently running over the mountains to Roanoke Ridge. The player may then pursue Buell on horseback, and after a certain amount of time will be able to jump onto him when close enough. From here, the player must hitch Buell at camp, save the game, then reload the save. Buell will be hitched in camp and appear similar to the above. However, if the player saddles or bonds with him, they will lose honor.
- ◆In his appearances in Red Dead Online, due to a developer oversight, Buell will sometimes spawn as a mare.
