• ◆The title of this mission is a reference to the play "The Winter's Tale" by William Shakespeare. In the play, a character is chased offstage after the stage direction "Exit, pursued by a bear".
• ◆Hosea's dialogue at the start of the mission will change, depending on if the player has completed "Americans at Rest" or "A Quiet Time" prior to this mission.
• ◆Hosea mentions how an old saddle of his got stolen at a place called "Deer Creek."
• ◆There are several communities throughout the United States that are named "Deer Creek" in states: Arizona, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Oklahoma, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.
• ◆This mission is the only instance in the game where Arthur mentions his former horse, Boadicea.
• ◆Unlike in free roam, the subtitles will refer to the Stable Owner as "Shopkeeper".
• ◆Depending on what horse the player buys, Hosea will have different lines.
• ◆Arthur will be given up to $15 for the mission depending on how little he has when starting, which the player is then forced to spend on the Morgan.

• ◆This mission adds the grill to the player's inventory which can then be used for seasoning meat at campsites. Before this mission the only way to season meat is to use the scout campsite at the main gang camp at Horseshoe Overlook.
• ◆Hosea can be seen smoking a cigar while he's waiting for Arthur to track the bear.
• ◆If Arthur has the offhand holster, it will be used when shooting at the bear.
• ◆It is possible to kill the bear using a Tomahawk or an Improved Arrow; make sure to skin and place the pelt on your horse before talking to Hosea.
• ◆If the player stays behind, this can be an easy way to kill the legendary bear without having to locate it outside of a mission. The Trapper is nearby in Roanoke Ridge, just over the state border in New Hanover, and the player can have some money early in the game by selling the bear's skin.
• ◆If the player decides to split up, they will be able to keep the Predator Bait for themselves to use for hunting after the mission.
• ◆After this mission, Hosea will disappear from camp until "The Spines of America" is complete. Susan Grimshaw may notify Arthur that he wants the latter to meet him at Emerald Ranch. If Arthur returns to camp with Hosea, Hosea will also state that he is going to Emerald Ranch.
• ◆If the player goes back to camp with Hosea, they will have the opportunity to get the Rolling Block Rifle early. When Hosea dismounts Silver Dollar, the player can mount him and ride him outside of camp. The player must then throw a stick of Dynamite near him, and the rifle will be knocked off by the explosion and can be then be picked up. Silver Dollar will respawn shortly after.
• ◆This mission is the only occurrence in the entire game where the Morgan horse (the Palomino variant) is available for purchase at the stables.
• ◆It is possible to get the Chocolate Roan Dutch Warmblood for free during this mission, allowing you to save your money if you’re playing on a non pre-order, standard version of the game. After purchasing the desired horse, the player must stop leading it while still inside the stables, double back and then jump into the stall where the Warmblood is kept. They must then feed the horse until the temporary horse icon appears on the mini-map, then exit the stables with their current horse and complete the mission as normal. After the mission, return to Valentine and whistle for the Warmblood to follow you. If the horse doesn’t come, simply go into the stables and immediately exit; the horse will be waiting outside and can then be saddled and stabled as normal.
• ◆The horse that Arthur is given at the beginning of the mission is a unique Raven Black Shire that appears nowhere else in the game.
