Lyndon Monroe

• ◆While Monroe is referred to as a captain, his shoulder board rank insignia indicates the grade of a first lieutenant. Although it is possible he received a brevet rank, this was discontinued in 1870 which would place Monroe's age in his late 40s if this were to be the case. Furthermore, while the sky blue color had once been used to indicate an officer in the infantry service, the color was changed to white in 1885 and sky blue was discontinued entirely. Monroe also appears to be serving in the capacity of a staff officer (it is unlikely the Army would ask an officer to submit a report on the conduct of his direct superior), in which case his shoulder boards and trouser stripes should be black.
• ◆Another possible explanation for the discrepancy in rank is that Monroe might have held a captain's commission with the United States Volunteers during the Spanish-American War, only recently concluded at the time of the events of the game. However, it would have been inappropriate for active duty personnel like Favours and his troops to refer to Monroe by a rank other than that he was currently serving at.
• ◆A captain in the United States Army commands a company. If Captain Monroe is within the chain of command of Favours' regiment (something not made entirely clear in the game), he would likely be in command of an infantry company garrisoned at Fort Wallace, while Colonel Favours would have held command of an entire regiment.
• ◆Monroe is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, more commonly referred to as West Point. As such, he would have been commissioned as an officer upon graduation.
• ◆Monroe's first name is only mentioned once by Rains Fall in "The Fine Art of Conversation" and only if the player did not meet him prior to the mission.
• ◆Monroe rides a different horse during each mission that he appears in.
• ◆Monroe could possibly be a reference to 1st Lieutenant John J. Dunbar, a fictional character created by Michael Blake for the 1990 film Dances with Wolves where he forms a deep bond with the local Sioux tribe, earning the name "Dances with Wolves".
