In 1907, Benjamin P. Lockhart Jr. runs a photography studio in Blackwater, West Elizabeth. His father, Benjamin P. Lockhart Sr., had operated the same business before him, and Benjamin has taken over its work as the town's photographer. His part in John Marston and Abigail Roberts' story begins when the couple comes to the studio for a portrait.
John and Abigail ask Benjamin to photograph them together. He presents the available backdrops and gives them the chance to choose how they will be pictured. Benjamin also lets them try different poses, while John and Abigail decide what they want from the sitting. The photographer remains behind the camera as the couple settles on their preferred arrangement.
Once John and Abigail are satisfied with the backdrop and pose, Benjamin takes their photograph. He charges them $5 for the portrait, and John pays him. Abigail and John thank Benjamin before leaving the Blackwater studio together.
