Of Men and Angels

Outside the cathedral in Saint Denis, Arthur finds Sister Calderón collecting food and money for the poor. He stops to speak with her, and she tells him that even a small act of help can matter to people in need. Arthur compares himself to her, and Sister Calderón says she once did wrong because she could not believe in goodness.

Arthur speaks of wanting a dignified end, but Sister Calderón does not accept that anyone is wholly good or evil. She tells him that a person can choose to do good, and that the heart may follow those choices. To ease his discomfort, she says she can still think terrible things about him if he prefers.

Sister Calderón asks Arthur to help feed the poor. He gives her either food or money for the collection. She gratefully accepts his contribution, and the mission ends outside the Saint Denis cathedral.
