The Iniquities of History

Arthur Morgan finds Jeremiah Compson sprawled across a bench outside Rhodes Train Station. Compson says that the court has taken his home and possessions, leaving Compson's Stead in the hands of the Bank of Rhodes. He asks Arthur to recover three articles from the abandoned property: an old pocket watch, his revolver and a ledger. Arthur rides north from Scarlett Meadows to the decaying house.

Arthur enters Compson's Stead through an unlocked side door and finds the pocket watch on a mantel. In another room, a photograph shows Compson beside an open trapdoor. Two squatters interrupt his search. One draws Compson's revolver, but its mechanism fails when he tries to fire it. He discards the weapon and attacks Arthur with a knife while his companion flees. Arthur deals with them, takes the revolver and opens the trapdoor.

Below the house, Arthur finds Compson's ledger among records that list enslaved people by name and value. He tracks Compson to a camp at Eris Field, southeast of the old home, and confronts him over his former trade. Arthur throws the ledger, watch and revolver into Compson's fire. Compson tries to shoot him with the ruined revolver, but it jams again. He falls face down and weeps beside the fire.
