Notas del jugador
Antes de 1893, Charlotte Balfour abandona Chicago junto a su marido, el banquero Cal Balfour, cuando él la convence de llevar una vida más sencilla en la naturaleza. Ambos se establecen en Willard's Rest, en Roanoke Ridge, New Hanover. Cal sobrevive al ataque de un oso, pero muere una semana después por sus heridas y deja a Charlotte sola en la finca. Como no sabe cazar, atrapar animales ni procurarse alimento, está convencida de que morirá de hambre.
En el Capítulo 6, Arthur Morgan encuentra a Charlotte llorando ante la tumba de Cal, a las afueras de Willard's Rest. La lleva al bosque cercano, le enseña a matar y desollar un conejo, y la defiende de unos lobos durante el regreso. En una visita posterior, Arthur la ve disparando a unas botellas con el rifle de Cal. Corrige su forma de manejar el arma hasta que logra acertar una botella. Charlotte le ofrece un guiso de conejo, pero Arthur se desploma en medio de un ataque de tos. Ella lo lleva a descansar y le deja una carta y dinero antes de salir a cazar.
Más adelante, Arthur encuentra a Charlotte sana, arreglada y capaz de mantener la propiedad por sí misma. Ella le agradece cuanto ha hecho por ella y le besa la mejilla. Ocho años después, John Marston visita Willard's Rest y le comunica que Arthur ha muerto. Charlotte dice que supuso que su enfermedad se lo llevó cuando dejó de visitarla, y recibe a John como amigo de Arthur. Si Arthur nunca le enseña a sobrevivir, Charlotte muere sola en su cabaña.

- ◆Her stranger mission unlocks after "A Fork in the Road".
- ◆Unlike most characters with stranger missions, Charlotte's missions don't have names. Instead, her strand of missions is technically considered a "Home Robbery" mission, as documented in the in-game log and the "Robberies" section of the official guide.
- ◆Although she lives in Willard's Rest, the robbery tip about her is called "Rocky Seven," the beta name for the area and her model in the game files even refers to her as the "Rocky Seven Widow".
- ◆Her mission strand is the only one that requires both Arthur and John to be played.
- ◆If Arthur meets Charlotte for the first encounter while carrying an NPC on horseback, she will run away from the grave, crying for him to leave her alone. This appears to remove all further opportunities to meet her from the game unless the player reloads a previous save file.
- ◆The player can encounter a man camped out on the hilltop east of Emerald Station who, when spoken to, describes a woman living alone north of Annesburg whom he has been observing while hiding in the bushes. A closer look at his campsite reveals pictures of naked women in his tent, dolls and a pair of handcuffs, suggesting he has plans to rape her. Strangely, if the player kills him, they will lose honor.
- ◆Charlotte Balfour is the only stranger who had a deep impact on Arthur's feelings about whom he does not give a single entry at all in his journal, neither by drawing nor description, despite Arthur having registered events with seemingly far less presence in his life. In addition, John says that Arthur wrote fondly of her, although there is no mention of her name in his journal.
- ◆If the player gets too close to Charlotte when she's sitting on her porch, she will make a comment about this while being visibly uncomfortable. If the player points a gun at her, she will react shocked and will pull out a gun of her own.
- ◆Even though she and Arthur exchange names during their third encounter, Charlotte still calls Arthur by his name in her letter to him beforehand. This obviously implies they were originally meant to reveal their names on first meeting.
- ◆Despite Charlotte inviting John to visit her homestead, she is nowhere to be found if the player returns later.
- ◆If Arthur triggers the first encounter but does not complete it, or if the player simply never helps her, either Arthur or John will find Charlotte's emaciated body (or skeleton, depending on how much time has passed) in the house.
