Emmet Granger est un hors-la-loi à la retraite et ancien associé de Jim "Boy" Calloway qui se tourne vers l'élevage de porcs après avoir reçu une grâce fédérale en 1895. Des rapports l'ont lié au massacre de Beaver Brook et aux meurtres de Chaparral, et il aurait également contribué à l'arrestation du gang Fosse. En 1899, il vit seul à Granger's Hoggery, près de Flatneck Station.
Arthur Morgan recherche Granger alors qu'il rassemble des informations pour le livre de Theodore Levin sur Calloway. Granger n'apprécie pas d'être traité comme une source sur un autre tireur et affirme que le livre devrait parler de lui. Il n'accepte de parler qu'après qu'Arthur a nettoyé le fumier de sa porcherie. Pendant qu'Arthur travaille, Granger s'attarde sur son propre passé violent, mais ne donne aucun récit utile sur Calloway.
Quand Arthur exige de nouveau des informations, Granger refuse. Arthur place un bâton de dynamite dans le tas de fumier et l'allume, couvrant Granger d'immondices lors de l'explosion. Humilié et furieux, Granger provoque Arthur en duel. Il affronte Arthur avec un couteau de lancer, mais Arthur le tue lors du duel et photographie son corps. Levin utilise ensuite la photographie dans son livre et prétend avoir tué Granger lui-même.
Anecdotes
- ◆Granger has a unique revolver that can be looted from him after he is killed, even though he uses a throwing knife during the duel instead. Said knife greatly resembles the player's Hunting Knife.
- ◆Also, he is the only known character in the Red Dead franchise to duel with a throwing knife instead of a gun.
- ◆Unlike the knives of other characters like the Vampire, Granger's knives have nothing special and, therefore, cannot be looted.
- ◆After Emmet is dealt with, the pigs can be skinned for the two hides the trapper needs. The same can be done to get feathers; four chicken feathers are needed for the trapper as well as three of the four rooster feathers needed.
- ◆If the player attempts to hogtie Granger after disarming him, Granger will brag about his skill with a knife and cut himself loose after only a few seconds. Likewise, attempting to pick him up while he is hogtied will result in him breaking free and headbutting Arthur/John.
- ◆If the player does nothing or shoots near him instead of using the dynamite stick, the duel will start anyway, with the only noticeable difference being that Granger is now clean and not dirty.
- ◆The player can also kill all of Granger's animals to start the duel as well. Granger will get angry and Arthur/John will mock him about it.
- ◆Despite saying he doesn't have any ranch hands, there will still be ranchers on his farm, both before and after his death. They'll make no mention of Granger, however, and will act and talk like any other ranchers in the game.
- ◆Before the epilogue, his ranch will be marked on the map in stylised handwriting as "Granger's Hoggery". After it, the name will disappear for unknown reasons, even if the player decides to kill him as John Marston.
- ◆Arthur's journal entry regarding this encounter seems to suggest he took pleasure in killing someone as vile as Granger.
- ◆With his ragged appearance, his difficulty with hog farming, and especially his dialogue about his wicked deeds of the past, Granger is a parody of William Munny, the protagonist of the Western film Unforgiven (1992). Whereas Munny transforms on-screen from a seemingly incompetent farmer to a cold killer who reverts to his old formidable skill, Granger does the opposite: he initially talks tough but reveals himself to be a paper tiger.
- ◆Granger's unique use of a throwing knife in a duel suggests he may also be based on Cuchillo from the Western film The Big Gundown.
- ◆Granger can be knocked unconscious after being disarmed in his duel. If so, like Flaco Hernández, the description of his revolver will, however, remain unchanged with the description of him as "the late gunslinger" and the journal will still report that he was killed.
