Il Gusenberg Sweeper è un mitra completamente automatico di calibro .45, sebbene Grand Theft Auto V lo collochi nella categoria delle mitragliatrici insieme a MG e Combat MG. Il suo nome richiama i soprannomi "Trench Broom" e "Chicago Typewriter" del Thompson. L'arma somiglia a un Thompson con un calcio in stile M1 o M1A1 dell'epoca della Seconda guerra mondiale, un caricatore a tamburo e finiture in legno usurate e scolorite.
Nella versione enhanced, viene venduto da Ammu-Nation per $14,600 dopo l'ultima missione della trama. È disponibile anche per i giocatori di Grand Theft Auto Online presso Ammu-Nation allo stesso prezzo. Nella versione originale di GTA V, la patch 1.10 lo aggiunge agli inventari dei protagonisti e lo rende gratuito da Ammu-Nation, mentre i possessori della Special e della Collector's Edition lo ricevono gratuitamente.
Il Sweeper infligge 34 danni, ha una cadenza di fuoco di 65 e possiede 38 di precisione, 56 di gittata e una statistica del caricatore da 40 colpi. Supera gli altri SMG per danno per colpo e cadenza di fuoco, risultando efficace a distanza ravvicinata e media. Le raffiche brevi ne preservano la precisione, mentre il fuoco automatico prolungato si disperde ampiamente e svuota rapidamente il suo caricatore relativamente piccolo. Accetta soltanto un Extended Clip, e il Combat MG lo supera in danno, precisione e capacità.

- ◆The Gusenberg Sweeper is named after contract killer Frank Gusenberg, who was a victim of the Saint Valentine's Day massacre. Gusenberg, along with six other people, was killed by several criminals using M1928A1 Thompsons.
- ◆The Sweeper element of the gun's name makes direct reference to a popular name for the Thompson submachine gun; "Trench Sweeper".
- ◆Whether the Extended Clip is equipped or not, the Gusenberg Sweeper always has a drum magazine (modelled after the real Thompson's 50-round drum), but with a different detail on the exterior.
- ◆In Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, a Thompson submachine gun can be seen among weapons on the shelves/racks inside Ammu-Nation.
- ◆A Thompson-based weapon appeared in a poster located inside the Underground Gun Shops, in Grand Theft Auto IV.
- ◆According to the stat window, it has a superior range than all the assault rifles in the game. However, the range of automatic aiming is much shorter than that of assault rifles.
- ◆Though the Ammu-Nation description says that "it looks great sticking out the window of a Roosevelt", it cannot be used from inside a vehicle. It can, however, be used while hanging off the side of a Roosevelt.
