Die Gray family ist eine wohlhabende Dynastie aus Lemoyne unter der Führung von Tavish Gray. Sie operiert von der Plantage Caliga Hall in Bayou Nwa aus und besitzt Einfluss in ganz Scarlett Meadows, besonders in Rhodes. Die Familie besitzt das Rhodes Parlour House und hat Einfluss auf das Scarlett Meadows Sheriff's Office, wo Tavishs Bruder Leigh als Sheriff dient. Ihre langjährige Fehde mit den Braithwaites prägt ihre Stellung in der Region. Beau Gray, Tavishs Sohn, und seine Cousins Iain und Scott gehören der jüngeren Generation an, während Jock Gray die Familie in Rhodes vertritt.
Nachdem sich die Van der Linde gang bei Clemens Point niedergelassen hat, helfen Dutch van der Linde und Arthur Morgan Leigh dabei, entflohene Gefangene wieder einzufangen. Leigh ernennt Dutch, Arthur und Bill Williamson zu vorläufigen Hilfssheriffs und setzt sie anschließend gegen eine Braithwaite-Mondscheinoperation ein. Tavish beauftragt später Arthur, John Marston und Javier Escuella damit, Braithwaite-Pferde zu stehlen. In Caliga Hall trifft Arthur auch Beau, der Penelope Braithwaite heimlich liebt. Arthur überbringt Briefe zwischen ihnen und wird hineingezogen, als Beau um Penelope fürchtet, nachdem sie eine Kundgebung für das Frauenwahlrecht plant.
Die Grays entdecken, dass die Gang für beide Familien gearbeitet hat, nachdem Arthur und Sean MacGuire ihre Tabakfelder für die Braithwaites niederbrennen. Leigh lockt Arthur, Bill, Sean und Micah Bell nach Rhodes, wo Gray-Schützen Sean töten und Bill gefangen nehmen. Arthur und Micah töten die Angreifer und anschließend Leigh und Jock vor dem Sheriff's Office, um Bill zu befreien. Tavish nimmt sich kurz darauf das Leben. Arthur hilft Beau und Penelope später dabei, Iain und Scott am Bahnhof von Rhodes zu entkommen, und das Paar reist mit der Postkutsche nach Boston. Bis 1907 bleiben die überlebenden Grays in Caliga Hall, während Sheriff Harmon Thomas ihre Macht in Rhodes einschränkt.
Wissenswertes
- ◆Beau and Penelope are not the first members of the rival families to fall in love. Douglas Gray and Lucille Braithwaite fell in love around the year 1806.
- ◆If the player visits the Rhodes cemetery, they may find both Lucille Braithwaite's and Douglas Gray's graves. While not confirmed it is possible that they were killed by the Grays and/or the Braithwaites for falling in love with the other, as well as giving the other the location of their respective family's gold.
- ◆There seems to be an inconsistency within the game regarding Leigh and Tavish. Members of the gang (i.e. Dutch and Arthur) refer to Leigh as Tavish's son while Beau says that Tavish is his father and Leigh is his uncle, making Tavish and Leigh brothers. This is likely a developer oversight, although in game terms it is plausible that the gang received false information about the family and the nature of its relationships.
- ◆A Confederate veteran in Rhodes, Joe Butler, can warn Arthur about the Grays. Describing them as "no-good white trash," Butler explains his understanding that the Grays made most of their fortune before moving to Rhodes "about fifty years ago" and causing trouble around the town. Foretelling the family's watchfulness regarding the Van der Linde gang, Butler further asserts his staunch belief that members of the family worked as Union spies during the Civil War.

- ◆The Gray family crest located in the Parlour House is inspired by the Bullworth Academy's emblems featured all over the school in Rockstar's 2006 open-world game Bully.
- ◆If the player returns to Caliga Hall in the Epilogue, they may find Tavish Gray dead. His corpse can be looted for a letter informing him that his ancestor was not an exiled Jacobite, but was in fact a spy for the Duke of Cumberland. It is implied that Tavish died of a heart attack upon seeing the contents of this letter.
