Player notes

The Gray family is a wealthy Lemoyne dynasty headed by Tavish Gray. They operate from Caliga Hall plantation in Bayou Nwa and hold influence across Scarlett Meadows, especially in Rhodes. The family owns the Rhodes Parlour House and has sway over the Scarlett Meadows Sheriff's Office, where Tavish's brother Leigh serves as sheriff. Their long feud with the Braithwaites shapes their position in the region. Beau Gray, Tavish's son, and his cousins Iain and Scott belong to the younger generation, while Jock Gray acts for the family in Rhodes.

After the Van der Linde gang settles at Clemens Point, Dutch van der Linde and Arthur Morgan help Leigh recover escaped prisoners. Leigh makes Dutch, Arthur and Bill Williamson temporary deputies, then employs them against a Braithwaite moonshine operation. Tavish later hires Arthur, John Marston and Javier Escuella to steal Braithwaite horses. At Caliga Hall, Arthur also meets Beau, who secretly loves Penelope Braithwaite. Arthur carries letters between them and becomes involved when Beau fears for Penelope after she plans a women's suffrage rally.

The Grays discover that the gang has worked for both families after Arthur and Sean MacGuire burn their tobacco fields for the Braithwaites. Leigh lures Arthur, Bill, Sean and Micah Bell to Rhodes, where Gray gunmen kill Sean and seize Bill. Arthur and Micah kill the attackers, then kill Leigh and Jock outside the Sheriff's Office to free Bill. Tavish soon takes his own life. Arthur later helps Beau and Penelope escape Iain and Scott at Rhodes station, and the pair leave by stagecoach for Boston. By 1907, the surviving Grays remain at Caliga Hall, with Sheriff Harmon Thomas reducing their power in Rhodes.

Trivia

  • โ—†Beau and Penelope are not the first members of the rival families to fall in love. Douglas Gray and Lucille Braithwaite fell in love around the year 1806.
  • โ—†If the player visits the Rhodes cemetery, they may find both Lucille Braithwaite's and Douglas Gray's graves. While not confirmed it is possible that they were killed by the Grays and/or the Braithwaites for falling in love with the other, as well as giving the other the location of their respective family's gold.
  • โ—†There seems to be an inconsistency within the game regarding Leigh and Tavish. Members of the gang (i.e. Dutch and Arthur) refer to Leigh as Tavish's son while Beau says that Tavish is his father and Leigh is his uncle, making Tavish and Leigh brothers. This is likely a developer oversight, although in game terms it is plausible that the gang received false information about the family and the nature of its relationships.
  • โ—†A Confederate veteran in Rhodes, Joe Butler, can warn Arthur about the Grays. Describing them as "no-good white trash," Butler explains his understanding that the Grays made most of their fortune before moving to Rhodes "about fifty years ago" and causing trouble around the town. Foretelling the family's watchfulness regarding the Van der Linde gang, Butler further asserts his staunch belief that members of the family worked as Union spies during the Civil War.
  • โ—†All members of the family can be seen wearing patterned clothing.
  • โ—†The Gray family crest located in the Parlour House is inspired by the Bullworth Academy's emblems featured all over the school in Rockstar's 2006 open-world game Bully.
  • โ—†If the player returns to Caliga Hall in the Epilogue, they may find Tavish Gray dead. His corpse can be looted for a letter informing him that his ancestor was not an exiled Jacobite, but was in fact a spy for the Duke of Cumberland. It is implied that Tavish died of a heart attack upon seeing the contents of this letter.
