La famille Gray est une riche dynastie de Lemoyne dirigée par Tavish Gray. Elle opère depuis la plantation Caliga Hall, dans Bayou Nwa, et exerce son influence dans tout Scarlett Meadows, particulièrement à Rhodes. La famille possède le Rhodes Parlour House et a de l'influence sur le Scarlett Meadows Sheriff's Office, où Leigh, le frère de Tavish, est shérif. Sa longue querelle avec les Braithwaite détermine sa position dans la région. Beau Gray, le fils de Tavish, et ses cousins Iain et Scott appartiennent à la jeune génération, tandis que Jock Gray représente la famille à Rhodes.
Après l'installation du gang Van der Linde à Clemens Point, Dutch van der Linde et Arthur Morgan aident Leigh à retrouver des prisonniers évadés. Leigh fait temporairement de Dutch, Arthur et Bill Williamson des adjoints, puis les emploie contre une opération de moonshine des Braithwaite. Tavish engage ensuite Arthur, John Marston et Javier Escuella pour voler des chevaux Braithwaite. À Caliga Hall, Arthur rencontre également Beau, qui aime secrètement Penelope Braithwaite. Arthur transporte des lettres entre eux et s'implique lorsque Beau craint pour Penelope après qu'elle prévoit un rassemblement pour le droit de vote des femmes.
Les Gray découvrent que le gang a travaillé pour les deux familles après qu'Arthur et Sean MacGuire ont brûlé leurs champs de tabac pour les Braithwaite. Leigh attire Arthur, Bill, Sean et Micah Bell à Rhodes, où des hommes de main Gray tuent Sean et capturent Bill. Arthur et Micah tuent les assaillants, puis tuent Leigh et Jock devant le Sheriff's Office afin de libérer Bill. Tavish met rapidement fin à ses jours. Arthur aide plus tard Beau et Penelope à échapper à Iain et Scott à la gare de Rhodes, et le couple part en diligence pour Boston. En 1907, les Gray survivants restent à Caliga Hall, tandis que Sheriff Harmon Thomas réduit leur pouvoir à Rhodes.
Anecdotes
- ◆Beau and Penelope are not the first members of the rival families to fall in love. Douglas Gray and Lucille Braithwaite fell in love around the year 1806.
- ◆If the player visits the Rhodes cemetery, they may find both Lucille Braithwaite's and Douglas Gray's graves. While not confirmed it is possible that they were killed by the Grays and/or the Braithwaites for falling in love with the other, as well as giving the other the location of their respective family's gold.
- ◆There seems to be an inconsistency within the game regarding Leigh and Tavish. Members of the gang (i.e. Dutch and Arthur) refer to Leigh as Tavish's son while Beau says that Tavish is his father and Leigh is his uncle, making Tavish and Leigh brothers. This is likely a developer oversight, although in game terms it is plausible that the gang received false information about the family and the nature of its relationships.
- ◆A Confederate veteran in Rhodes, Joe Butler, can warn Arthur about the Grays. Describing them as "no-good white trash," Butler explains his understanding that the Grays made most of their fortune before moving to Rhodes "about fifty years ago" and causing trouble around the town. Foretelling the family's watchfulness regarding the Van der Linde gang, Butler further asserts his staunch belief that members of the family worked as Union spies during the Civil War.
- ◆All members of the family can be seen wearing patterned clothing.
- ◆The Gray family crest located in the Parlour House is inspired by the Bullworth Academy's emblems featured all over the school in Rockstar's 2006 open-world game Bully.
- ◆If the player returns to Caliga Hall in the Epilogue, they may find Tavish Gray dead. His corpse can be looted for a letter informing him that his ancestor was not an exiled Jacobite, but was in fact a spy for the Duke of Cumberland. It is implied that Tavish died of a heart attack upon seeing the contents of this letter.
