Player notes

Dutch van der Linde and Hosea Matthews found the gang after trying to rob one another beside a road to Chicago in the mid-1870s. They become partners, living by Dutch's belief that outlaws can resist government and wealthy interests while helping the poor. Arthur Morgan joins as an orphaned teenager and becomes Dutch's most trusted gunman. Susan Grimshaw remains with the group after her relationship with Dutch ends, keeping camp in order. Dutch later takes in John Marston, and the gang grows into a mobile family of thieves, grifters and fugitives.

By 1899, the gang operates across the shrinking American frontier, moving its camp whenever lawmen, Pinkertons or enemies close in. Its members have recently fled Blackwater after a ferry robbery goes wrong, leaving Davey Callander dying and Jenny Kirk dead. The story first meets them sheltering in the snow at Colter. After the gang recovers, it establishes camps at Horseshoe Overlook, Clemens Point, Shady Belle and Lakay, working with the Gray and Braithwaite families before turning on both, and becoming entangled with Angelo Bronte's Saint Denis mob.

Dutch's plans grow bloodier as the gang robs banks, fights the O'Driscoll Boys and the Pinkertons, and loses members including Hosea Matthews and Lenny Summers. A failed Saint Denis bank robbery strands Dutch, Arthur, Bill Williamson, Javier Escuella and Micah Bell on Guarma, where they aid local rebels before returning to America. Back at Beaver Hollow, Arthur learns he is dying of tuberculosis and sees Micah feeding information to the Pinkertons. Dutch abandons Arthur during the gang's final collapse, and the surviving members scatter. John, Sadie Adler and Charles Smith later find Micah at Mount Hagen, where Dutch kills him before leaving.

Trivia

  • โ—†Almost every member of the gang has a custom sidearm, and some even have custom longarms, with examples of the latter including John, Sadie, Bill, Lenny, Hosea, and Uncle.
  • โ—†The gang's exploits are based on those of an amalgamation of several historical Old West gangs, particularly those of the 1890s that have become prominent in American literature, television, and film. These include the Dalton Gang, the Doolin-Dalton Gang (the original Wild Bunch), and especially Butch Cassidy's Wild Bunch, among others. Some examples of similarities are:
  • โ—†The Daltons participated in a disastrous robbery in Coffeyville, Kansas where multiple members were killed, not unlike the Blackwater Massacre or the Saint Denis bank robbery.
  • โ—†All eleven male members of the Doolin-Dalton gang met violent deaths, and a similarly large number is ultimately true for those in the Van der Linde gang.
  • โ—†Butch Cassidy's Wild Bunch pulled off a train robbery in 1899 that resembles the mission "Who the Hell is Leviticus Cornwall?", in which they used dynamite to blow open a train car. This robbery also put the real-life Pinkertons on their trail. Later on in 1899 they planned to run away to a subtropical island, and unlike the Van der Linde gang they made their getaway in 1901.
  • โ—†In the backstory, it was mentioned that Dutch and Hosea did a job in Kettering, Ohio around 1877. This is an anachronism, as the city was named after Charles F. Kettering in 1952.
  • โ—†Dutch, Bill, Micah, Javier, John and Charles are the only known members with a fugitive status, or are at least the only ones still wanted by the government in 1907.
  • โ—†In the game's end credits, Cleet and Joe are not listed as members of the Van der Linde gang: They do not include those two characters in the first subsection of the part of the credits, that lists the Cast, called "The Van der Linde Gang", but instead they list them in the much longer second subsection entitled "Full Cast". Here both of them are identified as "A Hired Gunman".
  • โ—†Mary-Beth, Tilly, Grimshaw, Strauss, Abigail, Pearson, Swanson, and Molly are the only members not to have a named mount. Out of them, Grimshaw will ride a horse after chasing down Anthony Foreman in "No, No and Thrice, No", Mary-Beth and Tilly both ride Tennessee Walkers when assisting in robbery companion missions as well as when Tilly escapes with Jack, Strauss rides a Morgan or Tennessee Walker if banished from camp, Swanson would ride away on a Tennessee Walker if alerted before "Who is Not Without Sin" and Abigail will temporarily commandeer Sadie's horse Bob in Arthur's final mission.
  • โ—†The Black and White photo of the gang for the compendium would have had to have been taken between "The First Shall Be Last" and "A Short Walk in a Pretty Town" due to the presence of Sean. It is, however, implied that it is after "Further Questions of Female Suffrage" due to this being the mission where Sadie first starts proving that she can ride with the men in the gang and is seen wearing men's clothing. However, this mission takes place not long after "The Sheep and the Goats", which means the gang would have still been heavily wanted at the place the photo was taken: Smithfield's Saloon in Valentine making it unlikely the gang would have traveled there to take a photo.
