Penelope Braithwaite

Born into the Braithwaite family, Penelope Braithwaite lives at Braithwaite Manor in Scarlett Meadows, Lemoyne. Before 1899, she falls in love with Beau Gray, despite the feud between their families, and joins the campaign for women's suffrage. Her aunt is Catherine Braithwaite, and her relatives include Gareth, Bartholomew, Gerald and Gertrude. Penelope's politics and her relationship with Beau put her at odds with the world around her.

Arthur Morgan first meets Penelope at the manor's gazebo while delivering a letter from Beau. Delighted to hear from him, she gives Arthur a reply for Beau. Its contents alarm Beau, who learns that Penelope intends to join Olive Calhoon's suffrage rally in Rhodes. He and Arthur find the women at their stagecoach and urge her to leave, but Penelope refuses to abandon the march. She accepts Arthur's protection as he drives the carriage through Rhodes. At the Bank of Rhodes, she asks Arthur to get Beau away from Iain and Scott Gray, who are confronting him.

Later, Penelope writes to Arthur from a cabin behind the burned ruins of Braithwaite Manor. Her family has confined her because of her suffrage work, and she believes either the Braithwaites or the Grays have killed Olive Calhoon. She tells Arthur that she and Beau intend to leave for Boston, Massachusetts, where Beau waits at the train station. Carrying Braithwaite jewelry, she cannot safely make the journey alone, so Arthur agrees to take her there.

At the station, Penelope reunites with Beau, but Iain and Scott try to drag him away until Arthur puts them down. Arthur buys the couple's tickets, and they board the train. Penelope's cousins pursue them on horseback, determined to stop her elopement and recover the jewelry. Arthur drives off the pursuers, then takes over the locomotive after its driver flees, bringing it to Riggs Station. Penelope offers him a sapphire bracelet before she and Beau take a carriage bound for Boston. Arthur gives Penelope his gun as they depart.
