Player notes

Sean MacGuire grows up in County Donegal, Ireland, the son of Fenian outlaw Darragh MacGuire. After Darragh flees with him to America and later dies, Sean is sent to reform school, which does little to change him. He meets Dutch van der Linde and Hosea Matthews in a North Elizabeth bar, follows them into an alley to steal Dutch's pocket watch, and discovers they have emptied his gun. Amused by his attempt, they feed him and bring him into the Van der Linde gang.

In Red Dead Online, Sean is separated from his companions and encounters the protagonist inside a cabin at Tanner's Reach. He initially holds them at gunpoint, then calms down and passes on information about a passing stagecoach. Sean later offers criminal jobs from Tanner's Reach or a camp near Quaker's Cove. During Blood Money, he works in Guido Martelli's criminal network and provides further work for the protagonist.

After the Blackwater ferry robbery, Sean is knocked unconscious, separated from the gang, and captured by bounty hunters led by Ike Skelding. Josiah Trelawny learns that he is being moved toward a Federal prison, so Arthur Morgan, Javier Escuella, Charles Smith and Trelawny go after him. They find Sean hanging upside down at a bounty hunter camp near Blackwater, free him after a gunfight, and return with him to Horseshoe Overlook. That night, Sean drinks with the gang and leaves with Karen Jones. He later joins Arthur, Charles and John Marston's train robbery, loots the baggage car, and escapes after Arthur saves him from guards.

At Clemens Point, Sean accompanies Arthur and Hosea Matthews on Catherine Braithwaite's work against the Gray family. He helps Arthur infiltrate Caliga Hall, burns the Gray tobacco operation, and flees with payroll taken from a wagon. He also takes Arthur on a homestead robbery and joins Arthur and Mary-Beth Gaskill on a stagecoach robbery. In Rhodes, Sean walks with Arthur, Bill Williamson and Micah Bell toward a supposed Gray job. A Gray sniper shoots him in the head before the others can react. Arthur kills Sheriff Gray after the ambush and tells Bill to see that Sean receives a proper burial.

  • โ—†Sean is the first member of the Van der Linde Gang to canonically have an on-screen death (not counting Davey Callander who dies at the time of his introduction).
  • โ—†After completing "A Short Walk in a Pretty Town", Sean's grave can be found slightly north of Clemens Point.
  • โ—†His horse, Ennis, shares a name with the county town of County Clare.
  • โ—†Like most members of the Van der Linde gang, Sean has a custom sidearm. His weapon is a Cattleman Revolver in blued steel with a nickel frame.
  • โ—†He says the word "fuck" more than any other member of the gang.
  • โ—†Sean's knife has a date engraved on the handles, 1848, the same year in which a series of revolutions occurred in Europe, and groups of young Irishmen had participation in those revolutions but failed like the great majority in that year. His knife was probably a gift from his family or father.
  • โ—†Despite being Irish, Sean's surname is spelled the Scottish way, with the prefix "Mac". However, it is not unheard of for Irish names to use the "Mac" prefix as well.
  • โ—†During a random camp conversation with Kieran, Sean will call him out for mispronouncing Colm O'Driscoll's first name, which is an Irish name. Sean eventually threatens Kieran until he pronounces the name correctly, despite Kieran insisting that Colm himself uses the American pronunciation.
  • โ—†Sean is one of three members to not have a winter outfit. The other two are Cleet and Josiah Trelawny.
  • โ—†Sean has an unused outfit consisting of a black leather stitched up duster coat, similar to the one worn by members of the gang during robberies.
  • โ—†When MacGuire sustains a head injury during "Pouring Forth Oil IV", Arthur says to him, "least you ain't got a hole in it", foreshadowing how Sean would later die.
  • โ—†If Arthur antagonizes the gang members enough, Sean is one of the characters who may punch him out of the camp. The others are Lenny, Javier, Bill, John, and Charles.
  • โ—†Sean, Sadie Adler, Joe, and Trelawny are the only members of the Van der Linde gang to appear in Red Dead Online.
  • โ—†Beside Tanner's Reach, Sean can also be found at camp southwest of Blackwater in Red Dead Online.
  • โ—†During his first encounter in Red Dead Online, the animation shows Sean cocking the hammer of his revolver but the hammer does not move. This is due to an oversight where the gun was not properly animated for the scene.
  • โ—†While having sex with Karen after being rescued from Blackwater, Sean mentions that one of his sexual acts (which annoys Karen) was "an old trick me Da taught me". This joke shows how Sean views his father's identity as a key part of his own life.
  • โ—†During Pouring Forth Oil IV, Sean reloads his Cattleman Revolver incorrectly during the first cutscene while he is practicing his gunslinging.
  • โ—†The Cattleman Revolver is reloaded via half-cocking the hammer and loading bullets through the loading gate. Sean's revolver swung out to the side, similar to the Double Action Revolver.
  • โ—†This is the only time Sean is seen reloading his revolver this way. Before and after the cutscene, Sean will start to reload correctly again.
