Player notes
Born in the mid-1870s, Karen Jones joins the Van der Linde gang before 1899 and embraces its outlaw life. Between 1895 and 1897, she helps Arthur Morgan and Javier Escuella rob a bank in Tucson, Arizona. Disguised as a nun, she conceals guns beneath her clothes and shoots a man in the knee during the job. Her nerve, drinking and ability to play a part make her useful in the gang's robberies and camp life.
At Horseshoe Overlook, Karen rides with Arthur, Uncle, Tilly and Mary-Beth to Valentine. She mocks Molly O'Shea for acting above the other women, then enters the hotel with a man and tries to rob him. He strikes her before Arthur steps in. After Sean MacGuire returns to camp, Karen drinks heavily with him at the celebration and spends the night with him, though their brief relationship soon turns sour. She also begins planning a robbery of the Valentine bank.
At Clemens Point, Karen revives the Valentine plan and brings Arthur, Lenny Summers and Bill Williamson into it. She enters the bank in disguise, draws the staff's attention with a false story, then pulls her revolver while the others empty the vault. They fight their way out of Valentine. After the gang reaches Shady Belle, Karen's drinking worsens as losses mount, though she joins the celebration when Jack Marston returns and helps defend camp when the O'Driscolls attack.
At Beaver Hollow, Karen is usually drunk, angry and dismissive of those who worry about her. She clashes repeatedly with Susan Grimshaw, especially after Grimshaw shoots Molly, whose death affects Karen deeply despite their earlier hostility. As the Van der Linde gang breaks apart, Karen leaves with Simon Pearson, Uncle and Mary-Beth. She vanishes after the gang's collapse, and Tilly later tells John Marston that she believes Karen drank herself to death.
Trivia
- โAs Karen's drinking progresses further in the game, her hairstyle is more and more unkempt, at the latter end often lacking her signature ringlets.
- โShe and Sadie are the only female members of the gang to do guard duty.
- โShe is one of the few gang members to not have a requested item from Arthur.
- โHer face cannot be seen during Chapter 1 as it is covered except for her eyes and nose. She is the only member whose face cannot be seen during this chapter.
- โIn a random camp dialogue, Karen recounts the boys riding back into camp, covered in blood after the Blackwater Massacre, implying she was at camp during the events of the failed ferry job.
- โDuring a random event at camp, Karen can dance with the player whether he accepts or refuses. This can occur at Clemens Point if the player sees Dutch is dancing with Susan Grimshaw and Karen is standing by his tent.
- โIn "A Rage Unleashed", although she doesn't use it Karen can be seen holding a Double-Barreled Shotgun when Dutch meets Eagle Flies at camp for the first time.
- โTilly's belief in the Epilogue that Karen drank herself to death is foreshadowed by a random Chapter 6 event at camp in which Tilly tells Arthur that she's worried Karen will drink herself to death.
