Player notes
Jack Marston is born in 1895 to John Marston and Abigail Roberts while they belong to the Van der Linde gang. The gang raises him around its camps, with Abigail acting as his closest guardian while John struggles to accept fatherhood and has once left the gang for a year. Jack grows up among people he treats as family, listening to their stories and spending much of his time close to camp. He is quiet, gentle and drawn to books, games and stories of knights rather than the life around him.
In 1899, Jack lives with the gang at Horseshoe Overlook and Clemens Point. Arthur Morgan takes him fishing, but Pinkerton agents Andrew Milton and Edgar Ross interrupt the outing. John dismisses Jack when he asks to play knights, though Abigail comforts him afterwards. At Clemens Point, Jack befriends a stray dog that Dutch names Cain. The Braithwaites abduct Jack and hand him over to Angelo Bronte, who keeps him at his Saint Denis mansion until Dutch brings him home. Jack returns safely to Shady Belle, where the gang celebrates, and John begins making more time for him.
At Beaver Hollow, Jack is frightened by the gang's fighting and by Cain's disappearance. John defends him when Micah Bell insults them during a game of knights. After Abigail is taken by Milton and John is left wounded during a train robbery, Arthur sends Tilly Jackson and Jack to Copperhead Landing to await Sadie's return with Abigail. Jack never sees Arthur again. In 1907, he and Abigail leave John at Pronghorn Ranch, then join him once he establishes Beecher's Hope. Jack fishes with his father, attends his parents' wedding and remains at the ranch with his family and Rufus.
Trivia
- โJack and Edgar Ross are the only central characters in the series to appear in all four time periods: 1899 and 1907 in Red Dead Redemption 2, and 1911 and 1914 in Red Dead Redemption. However, Jack is the only one to survive all of the time periods.
- โJack and Ross meet only two times, during "A Fisher of Men" and "Remember My Family"; in both instances, they were near a river and Ross was holding a shotgun.
- โJack Marston is the third youngest playable character in a Rockstar game, after Jimmy Hopkins from Bully and Red Harlow from Red Dead Revolver at the beginning of the game.
- โJack is the only Red Dead protagonist to not bear any facial scars.
- โHe is also the only protagonist to have freckles.
- โThe player can use a cheat code to play as an adult Jack Marston before the mission "The Last Enemy That Shall Be Destroyed"; however, doing so will lock any storyline missions the player has and will make the game unavailable to autosave.

- โWhen playable, Jack can be heard muttering to himself or even towards his deceased father when idle for stretches of time.

- โWhen played with low Honor, Jack is the only protagonist in the Redemption saga not to reject prostitutes. Rather, they will reject him instead.
- โDuring The "Last Enemy That Shall Be Destroyed", the player is able to dismount the horse and freely roam as Jack Marston. He will have his own sprinting animation, but other animations are shared with John Marston. This is also the only time the player is able to play as 16 year old Jack.
- โJack's Cowboy Outfit retroactively takes influence from both John Marston and Arthur Morgan. He wears John's hat, holster and gun belt, and also wears a tan jacket, a button-up shirt, a bandana around his neck and dark pants tucked into his boots like Arthur did.
- โIt's possible that Jack himself took inspiration from the two of them when he crafted his Cowboy Outfit to honor them.
- โJackโs favorite Western novel foreshadows his future confrontation with Ross.
- โA randomly occurring audio glitch in Red Dead Redemption 2 became famous due to it changing the player's voice to one that sounds almost identical to Josh Blaylock's take on Jack from the first game. Upon discovery, it caused a great deal of speculation among players, but evidence that the lines seem to belong to a random NPC also voiced by Blaylock later surfaced.
- โAs a 4-year old in 1899, whilst difficult to notice, Jack is missing a front tooth.
- โThe 2013 game Grand Theft Auto V, another game developed by Rockstar Games, includes a reference to Jack and an easter egg for Red Dead Redemption; a book can be located in one of the protagonists' houses called "Red Dead" and written by a J. Marston.
