Jack Marston wird 1895 als Sohn von John Marston und Abigail Roberts geboren, während sie der Van der Linde gang angehören. Die Gang zieht ihn in ihren Lagern auf, wobei Abigail seine engste Bezugsperson ist, während John Schwierigkeiten hat, die Vaterschaft anzunehmen, und die Gang einst für ein Jahr verlassen hat. Die Braithwaites entführen Jack und übergeben ihn Angelo Bronte, der ihn in seinem Anwesen in Saint Denis festhält, bis Dutch ihn nach Hause bringt. Jack kehrt sicher nach Shady Belle zurück, wo die Gang feiert, und John beginnt, sich mehr Zeit für ihn zu nehmen.
Bei Beaver Hollow wird Jack durch die Kämpfe der Gang und durch Cains Verschwinden verängstigt. John verteidigt ihn, als Micah Bell sie während eines Ritterspiels beleidigt. Nachdem Abigail von Milton gefangen genommen wird und John bei einem Zugraub verletzt zurückbleibt, schickt Arthur Tilly Jackson und Jack nach Copperhead Landing, um dort auf Sadies Rückkehr mit Abigail zu warten. Jack sieht Arthur nie wieder. 1907 verlassen er und Abigail John bei Pronghorn Ranch und schließen sich ihm an, nachdem er Beecher's Hope aufgebaut hat. Jack geht mit seinem Vater angeln, nimmt an der Hochzeit seiner Eltern teil und bleibt mit seiner Familie und Rufus auf der Ranch.

- ◆Jack and Edgar Ross are the only central characters in the series to appear in all four time periods: 1899 and 1907 in Red Dead Redemption 2, and 1911 and 1914 in Red Dead Redemption. However, Jack is the only one to survive all of the time periods.
- ◆Jack and Ross meet only two times, during "A Fisher of Men" and "Remember My Family"; in both instances, they were near a river and Ross was holding a shotgun.
- ◆Jack Marston is the third youngest playable character in a Rockstar game, after Jimmy Hopkins from Bully and Red Harlow from Red Dead Revolver at the beginning of the game.
- ◆Jack is the only Red Dead protagonist to not bear any facial scars.

- ◆During The "Last Enemy That Shall Be Destroyed", the player is able to dismount the horse and freely roam as Jack Marston. He will have his own sprinting animation, but other animations are shared with John Marston. This is also the only time the player is able to play as 16 year old Jack.
- ◆Jack's Cowboy Outfit retroactively takes influence from both John Marston and Arthur Morgan. He wears John's hat, holster and gun belt, and also wears a tan jacket, a button-up shirt, a bandana around his neck and dark pants tucked into his boots like Arthur did.
- ◆It's possible that Jack himself took inspiration from the two of them when he crafted his Cowboy Outfit to honor them.
- ◆Jack’s favorite Western novel foreshadows his future confrontation with Ross.
- ◆A randomly occurring audio glitch in Red Dead Redemption 2 became famous due to it changing the player's voice to one that sounds almost identical to Josh Blaylock's take on Jack from the first game. Upon discovery, it caused a great deal of speculation among players, but evidence that the lines seem to belong to a random NPC also voiced by Blaylock later surfaced.
- ◆As a 4-year old in 1899, whilst difficult to notice, Jack is missing a front tooth.
- ◆The 2013 game Grand Theft Auto V, another game developed by Rockstar Games, includes a reference to Jack and an easter egg for Red Dead Redemption; a book can be located in one of the protagonists' houses called "Red Dead" and written by a J. Marston.
