Cain, a stray male Catahoula Cur, wanders into the Van der Linde gang's camp at Clemens Point. Jack Marston spots him and quickly grows fond of him. Dutch allows Jack to keep the dog, gives him the name Cain, and Cain begins treating the camp as his home. He seeks out attention from the gang and becomes part of the life around the lakeside camp.
At Clemens Point, Cain keeps Arthur company when he fishes from the pier and often sleeps beside Bill Williamson, who pets him and shows him affection. Micah Bell treats Cain with open hostility, sometimes shouting at or kicking him, drawing objections from Bill and Arthur. The rest of the gang also objects when Arthur scolds the dog, while Micah is the only one who approves. Cain remains with the gang when it relocates to Shady Belle, where he wanders the grounds and sleeps on the house's back porch at night.
After the gang returns from Guarma and establishes a brief camp at Lakay, Cain is occasionally found resting near the water. This is his last appearance with the gang. During the move from Lakay to Beaver Hollow, he disappears. Jack searches for him until Micah bluntly tells him that Cain is not coming back. Arthur questions Micah further, and Micah's response leaves Arthur suspecting that he either drove Cain away or killed him.

- โDutch names him after the Biblical figure of Cain, the first son of Adam and Eve who murdered his brother Abel and was condemned to wander the earth.
- โCain's name may also reference the teachings of Judaist scholar Abba Arikha, who claimed that God gave Cain a dog, making him an example to murderers.
- โAt some point in Clemens Point, Micah can be seen kicking Cain.
