The Cave Hermit lives alone in the Hidden Tunnel, northwest of Pronghorn Ranch in Big Valley, West Elizabeth. He says that he once studied and boxed at Oxford, but came to believe that the world lacked the intelligence to understand him. He leaves society behind and takes up residence in the cave, deciding that he wants to become the Devil.
Arthur can encounter the Hermit five times inside his lair. On the first visit, the man appears on a platform above the tunnel and orders Arthur to leave. He insists that, having withdrawn from society, he should be left alone by it. The Hermit initially presents himself as the Devil, though he later concedes that he is not.
The Hermit remains in the tunnel despite his apparent loneliness and his hostile reactions to visitors. He speaks of other people with contempt, treating them as fools beneath his intellect, and returns to his fixation on becoming the Devil. His long isolation shows in his worn clothes, bushy beard and grey hair shaped into horn-like points.
Trivia
- โIf the player is able to get to the higher part of the cave where the Cave Hermit is camping, he will not interact with the player or move whatsoever. However, if the player aims their gun at him, he will bemoan that this is why he hates humanity.
- โAccording to him, he is a philosopher which possibly alludes to the Greek philosopher Plato, and his 'Allegory of the cave'.
