Player notes
The Hermit lives alone at a cottage in Manito Glade, in Roanoke Ridge, State of New Hanover, north of Annesburg. He enters the story when the protagonist comes near his homestead. A hostile, unsociable man, he immediately shouts obscenities from the property and orders the intruder away. He keeps the Rare Shotgun at hand while making his threats, refusing any peaceful contact at his door.
If the protagonist continues toward the cottage, the Hermit opens fire. He can be encountered at Manito Glade on only three occasions, and each meeting follows his warning with the danger of his shotgun. His manner never softens. He treats anyone approaching the cabin as an enemy and defends his secluded home with violence rather than allowing them to remain on the property.
In 1899, the Hermit is a middle-aged man with a long dark moustache, a large hat, a beige shirt, red tie and black work pants. By 1907, he appears much older, with greyer skin and more weathered features, wearing a red shirt, yellow tie and blue jeans. After the third encounter, he disappears from Manito Glade for the remainder of the game.
Trivia
- โOne half of the Mended Map can be found in the Hermit's house. If the player visits the Hermit after the first half of the map (which points to his house) was already found at the Hermit Woman's cabin, they will receive the second half. But if the player visits the Hermit first, they will find the first half of the map in his house, which will be confusing since the torn map will point to the very place where it was just found, and there will still be no clues about the location of the second half of the map or the treasure.
- โIt's possible that he and the Hermit Woman are related since each of them possesses a part of the Mended Map.
- โA drawing of him in the journal depicts him with a Carbine Repeater instead of the Rare Shotgun.
- โThe outfit that he wears in the epilogue may be a possible reference to the Looney Toons character Yosemite Sam.
- โOnce obtained, his Rare Shotgun will be replaced with a regular Double-Barreled Shotgun or a Repeating Shotgun the next time he is encountered.
- โThe hermit is one of the few characters in the game that the player can get two different journal entries for, from both Arthur and John.
- โGetting into a gunfight with the hermit is dangerous, as he will kill the player with one shot, no matter their health. He is among the only four enemies in the game that can do this, the other three being the Night Folk, the Vampire, and Sheriff Freeman.
- โPhotos of the hermit in the Rockstar Social Club will list him as the "Angry Isolationist".
- โIt's possible that the hermit is Charlie Tatum, the killer of Otis Miller. The Otis Miller Boys Cigarette Card also features a man who resembles the Hermit in height and in appearance. This could also explain why he has one part of the Mended Map.
- โThe Hermit's holster, although empty is on his left hip, suggesting he is left handed. He shares this trait with Jim "Boy" Calloway. But despite this, he holds his Rare Shotgun reversed for a left-handed person.
