L'Hermit vive da solo in un cottage a Manito Glade, a Roanoke Ridge, nello Stato di New Hanover, a nord di Annesburg. Entra nella storia quando il protagonista si avvicina alla sua proprietà. Uomo ostile e poco socievole, urla subito oscenità dalla proprietà e ordina all'intruso di andarsene. Tiene a portata di mano il Rare Shotgun mentre pronuncia le sue minacce, rifiutando qualunque contatto pacifico alla sua porta.
Se il protagonista continua verso il cottage, l'Hermit apre il fuoco. Può essere incontrato a Manito Glade solo in tre occasioni, e ogni incontro fa seguire al suo avvertimento il pericolo del suo fucile. Il suo atteggiamento non si addolcisce mai. Tratta chiunque si avvicini alla capanna come un nemico e difende con la violenza la sua casa isolata, invece di permettere che rimanga sulla proprietà.
Nel 1899, l'Hermit è un uomo di mezza età con lunghi baffi scuri, un cappello grande, una camicia beige, una cravatta rossa e pantaloni da lavoro neri. Nel 1907 appare molto più anziano, con la pelle più grigia e lineamenti più segnati dalle intemperie, indossando una camicia rossa, una cravatta gialla e jeans blu. Curiosità
- ◆One half of the Mended Map can be found in the Hermit's house. If the player visits the Hermit after the first half of the map (which points to his house) was already found at the Hermit Woman's cabin, they will receive the second half. But if the player visits the Hermit first, they will find the first half of the map in his house, which will be confusing since the torn map will point to the very place where it was just found, and there will still be no clues about the location of the second half of the map or the treasure.
- ◆It's possible that he and the Hermit Woman are related since each of them possesses a part of the Mended Map.
- ◆A drawing of him in the journal depicts him with a Carbine Repeater instead of the Rare Shotgun.
- ◆The outfit that he wears in the epilogue may be a possible reference to the Looney Toons character Yosemite Sam.
- ◆Once obtained, his Rare Shotgun will be replaced with a regular Double-Barreled Shotgun or a Repeating Shotgun the next time he is encountered.
- ◆The hermit is one of the few characters in the game that the player can get two different journal entries for, from both Arthur and John.
- ◆Getting into a gunfight with the hermit is dangerous, as he will kill the player with one shot, no matter their health. He is among the only four enemies in the game that can do this, the other three being the Night Folk, the Vampire, and Sheriff Freeman.
- ◆Photos of the hermit in the Rockstar Social Club will list him as the "Angry Isolationist".
- ◆It's possible that the hermit is Charlie Tatum, the killer of Otis Miller. The Otis Miller Boys Cigarette Card also features a man who resembles the Hermit in height and in appearance. This could also explain why he has one part of the Mended Map.
- ◆The Hermit's holster, although empty is on his left hip, suggesting he is left handed. He shares this trait with Jim "Boy" Calloway. But despite this, he holds his Rare Shotgun reversed for a left-handed person.
