L'Hermite vit seul dans une cabane à Manito Glade, dans Roanoke Ridge, État de New Hanover, au nord d'Annesburg. Il entre dans l'histoire lorsque le protagoniste s'approche de sa propriété. Homme hostile et peu sociable, il crie immédiatement des obscénités depuis son terrain et ordonne à l'intrus de partir. Il garde le Rare Shotgun à portée de main tout en proférant ses menaces, refusant tout contact pacifique à sa porte.
Si le protagoniste continue vers la cabane, l'Hermite ouvre le feu. Il ne peut être rencontré à Manito Glade qu'à trois occasions, et chaque rencontre fait suite à son avertissement avec le danger de son fusil de chasse. Son attitude ne s'adoucit jamais. Il considère toute personne approchant de la cabane comme un ennemi et défend son domicile isolé par la violence plutôt que de la laisser rester sur la propriété.
En 1899, l'Hermite est un homme d'âge mûr avec une longue moustache sombre, un grand chapeau, une chemise beige, une cravate rouge et un pantalon de travail noir. En 1907, il paraît bien plus âgé, avec une peau plus grise et des traits davantage marqués par les intempéries, portant une chemise rouge, une cravate jaune et un jean bleu. Après la troisième rencontre, il disparaît de Manito Glade pour le reste du jeu.
Anecdotes
- ◆One half of the Mended Map can be found in the Hermit's house. If the player visits the Hermit after the first half of the map (which points to his house) was already found at the Hermit Woman's cabin, they will receive the second half. But if the player visits the Hermit first, they will find the first half of the map in his house, which will be confusing since the torn map will point to the very place where it was just found, and there will still be no clues about the location of the second half of the map or the treasure.
- ◆It's possible that he and the Hermit Woman are related since each of them possesses a part of the Mended Map.
- ◆A drawing of him in the journal depicts him with a Carbine Repeater instead of the Rare Shotgun.
- ◆The outfit that he wears in the epilogue may be a possible reference to the Looney Toons character Yosemite Sam.
- ◆Once obtained, his Rare Shotgun will be replaced with a regular Double-Barreled Shotgun or a Repeating Shotgun the next time he is encountered.
- ◆The hermit is one of the few characters in the game that the player can get two different journal entries for, from both Arthur and John.
- ◆Getting into a gunfight with the hermit is dangerous, as he will kill the player with one shot, no matter their health. He is among the only four enemies in the game that can do this, the other three being the Night Folk, the Vampire, and Sheriff Freeman.
- ◆Photos of the hermit in the Rockstar Social Club will list him as the "Angry Isolationist".
- ◆It's possible that the hermit is Charlie Tatum, the killer of Otis Miller. The Otis Miller Boys Cigarette Card also features a man who resembles the Hermit in height and in appearance. This could also explain why he has one part of the Mended Map.
- ◆The Hermit's holster, although empty is on his left hip, suggesting he is left handed. He shares this trait with Jim "Boy" Calloway. But despite this, he holds his Rare Shotgun reversed for a left-handed person.
