Brynn Tildon is an American journalist who writes for the Saint Denis Times. He lives in Washington State before coming south to Saint Denis, the Lemoyne city where he works for the newspaper. His part in the story takes place among the guests gathered at Mayor Lemieux's residence.
At Mayor Lemieux's party, Tildon speaks with Hector Fellowes and Bill Williamson. He puts questions to the two men, but Bill struggles to give coherent replies. Bill is uneasy under the journalist's questioning, though he is less openly irritated by it than Fellowes.
Fellowes cuts into the conversation and berates Tildon. He then leaves the exchange, ending the journalist's encounter with Fellowes and Bill at the mayor's party.
