Hamish Sinclair is a former United States Army soldier who loses his right leg to a cannonball during the American Civil War. He replaces it with a wooden prosthesis and later lives as a hunter at Veteran's Homestead in Grizzlies East, Ambarino. His former commander is named Buell, and Hamish gives the same name to his horse. Though his injury limits him, he continues to fish and hunt around O'Creagh's Run.
In Red Dead Online, the protagonist finds Hamish at his homestead. Expecting a robbery, he says he has nothing worth taking and points to the leg he has already lost. Once the protagonist helps him from his chair, Hamish explains that visitors sometimes handle work he cannot manage alone. He sends them after a stolen supply wagon, then offers recovery, delivery, rescue and hunting jobs around O'Creagh's Run and Cotorra Springs.
In 1899, Arthur Morgan or John Marston meets Hamish beside a rock in Grizzlies East after Buell throws him and runs off carrying his wooden leg. The protagonist returns the horse and leg, and Hamish invites them to fish another day. At O'Creagh's Run, Hamish pursues a giant pike he calls the Tyrant. The fish drags him into the water, but the protagonist pulls him out. Hamish gives them his handmade lure, and the Tyrant is later caught and mounted over his fireplace.
On another visit, Hamish talks about his life before taking the protagonist after a she-wolf. A wolf pack attacks them, followed by a huge alpha male that the protagonist kills. Its head joins the Tyrant above Hamish's fireplace. On their last hunt, they track an enormous boar. It throws Hamish from his horse and wounds him beyond help. Before dying, he asks the protagonist to take Buell. If John is the one who returns after Arthur's earlier visits, he tells Hamish that Arthur has died.
Trivia
- โBuell, Hamish's horse, is a Dutch Warmblood with a unique Gold Cremello coat.
- โThere were two real American generals during the Civil War named Don Carlos Buell and George P. Buell, both of whom were cousins. During the cutscene before The Veteran Part III, Hamish mentions a battle where the bodies were so thick that "you could've walked across the whole field without your boots touching mud." This was a detail noted by Ulysses S. Grant in the aftermath of the Battle of Shiloh, during which Don Carlos was a commander.
- โIf the player does not complete the final mission with Hamish, John can meet him during the epilogue and inform him of Arthur's passing. Hamish will also show John the various trophies Arthur helped him kill while embellishing that Arthur had killed the wolf with his bare hands.
- โAfter the first encounter with him is complete, he can be killed with the use of either dynamite or fire arrows.
- โShooting his wooden leg will result in it bleeding as if it was organic. This is likely a developer oversight.
