Player notes
Born in Cornwall and long since settled in the United States, Josiah Trelawny is a British conjuror, conman and occasional outlaw who has ridden with the Van der Linde gang for years. He comes and goes more freely than the others, sometimes vanishing for months, but returns with leads and schemes. Behind his gentlemanly manner and stage tricks, he keeps a wife and two sons, Tarquin and Cornelius, in Saint Denis, concealing that domestic life from the gang.
Arthur Morgan first meets Trelawny in Valentine after the brawl with Tommy. Trelawny brings news that bounty hunters have captured Sean MacGuire, then travels with Javier Escuella and Charles Smith toward Blackwater. When Arthur joins them, Trelawny helps trail the bounty hunters along the river and draws two guards away so Arthur and Javier can kill them quietly. He leaves before the others continue to rescue Sean.
At Clemens Point, Sheriff Leigh Gray and Deputy Archibald MacGregor transport Trelawny toward Rhodes over an illegal gold prospecting matter. When other prisoners escape, Arthur helps recapture them, and Gray releases Trelawny in return. Later, bounty hunters seize him from his caravan north of Rhodes. Arthur and Charles track them to a farm, free Trelawny and clear the men from the cornfield. Trelawny remains near camp, then introduces Arthur to Alden Carruthers' stagecoach tips and distracts Chester Damsen and her guards during a robbery.
In Saint Denis, Trelawny arranges the robbery of The Grand Korrigan. He secures Javier a job aboard the riverboat, has Leopold Strauss learn Desmond Blythe's cards, and prepares Arthur with a shave and suitable clothes. Arthur wins at the card table and takes the vault money with Javier, but the gang must shoot its way off the vessel. Trelawny disappears afterward. As the gang breaks apart at Beaver Hollow, Arthur gives him permission to leave. Trelawny departs for good, and can later be heard reunited with his family in Saint Denis.
Trivia
- ◆Trelawny heavily resembles the Strange Man in both appearance and attire. Arthur mentions in his journal, prior to the ferry robbery in Blackwater, that he saw a stranger that looks like Trelawny, even though he hadn't seen him for months.
- ◆If Arthur antagonizes Josiah in camp, he may say that Trelawny is a "strange man".
- ◆In the Beaver Hollow chapter, there is a very rare chance that Trelawny will try to talk to the player about Guarma.
- ◆Even before he is brought to the gang's camp at Clemens Point, his name may show up in the camp's ledger as having donated a random item.
- ◆In Saint Denis, Josiah can be heard talking to his family in an apartment. If the player calls out to him he will be surprised but tells them he will see them in “the office”.
- ◆As mentioned during his first appearance, Trelawny originally wished to go to New York, but hence his return to the western states, this did not go to plan.
- ◆In "Magicians for Sport", it's shown that Trelawny owns a walking cane; he is never seen using it, however.
- ◆"Trelawny" is an alternative spelling of "Trelawney", a Cornish surname meaning "A person from a town with a church".
- ◆There is a random camp encounter that was cut from the game in which Trelawny has a conversation with Micah Bell, during which Micah insults Trelawny by calling him first a "rat" and then a "snake". In response, Trelawny uses his magic to make a snake appear in Micah's hat, startling him. The dialogue from this encounter can be found within the game files.
- ◆Josiah, Sadie Adler, Joe, and Sean MacGuire are the only members of the Van der Linde gang to appear in Red Dead Online.
- ◆Trelawny is one of the few surviving members of the Van der Linde gang besides Orville Swanson who aren’t seen in the Epilogue.
- ◆Trelawny was supposed to have a custom short-barrel Double-action Revolver with a white grip, but it was cut.
