Né en Cornwall et installé depuis longtemps aux United States, Josiah Trelawny est un prestidigitateur britannique, escroc et hors-la-loi occasionnel qui chevauche avec le gang Van der Linde depuis des années. Il va et vient plus librement que les autres, disparaissant parfois pendant des mois, mais revient avec des pistes et des combines. Derrière ses manières de gentleman et ses tours de scène, il entretient une épouse et deux fils, Tarquin et Cornelius, à Saint Denis, dissimulant cette vie de famille au gang.
Arthur Morgan rencontre Trelawny pour la première fois à Valentine après la bagarre avec Tommy. Trelawny lui apprend que des chasseurs de primes ont capturé Sean MacGuire, puis part vers Blackwater avec Javier Escuella et Charles Smith. Quand Arthur les rejoint, Trelawny aide à suivre les chasseurs de primes le long de la rivière et éloigne deux gardes afin qu'Arthur et Javier puissent les tuer discrètement. Il part avant que les autres ne poursuivent leur route pour secourir Sean.
À Clemens Point, Sheriff Leigh Gray et Deputy Archibald MacGregor emmènent Trelawny vers Rhodes pour une affaire illégale de prospection d'or. Lorsque d'autres prisonniers s'évadent, Arthur aide à les reprendre, et Gray libère Trelawny en échange. Plus tard, des chasseurs de primes le capturent dans sa caravane au nord de Rhodes. Arthur et Charles les suivent jusqu'à une ferme, libèrent Trelawny et éliminent les hommes dans le champ de maïs. Trelawny reste près du camp, puis présente à Arthur les tuyaux d'Alden Carruthers sur les diligences et distrait Chester Damsen et ses gardes pendant un vol.
À Saint Denis, Trelawny organise le braquage de The Grand Korrigan. Il procure à Javier un emploi à bord du bateau à vapeur, demande à Leopold Strauss d'apprendre les cartes de Desmond Blythe, et prépare Arthur avec un rasage et des vêtements appropriés. Arthur gagne à la table de cartes et prend l'argent du coffre avec Javier, mais le gang doit se frayer un chemin à coups de feu pour quitter le navire. Trelawny disparaît ensuite. Alors que le gang se disloque à Beaver Hollow, Arthur lui donne la permission de partir. Trelawny s'en va pour de bon, et on peut plus tard l'entendre retrouvé avec sa famille à Saint Denis.
Anecdotes
- ◆Trelawny heavily resembles the Strange Man in both appearance and attire. Arthur mentions in his journal, prior to the ferry robbery in Blackwater, that he saw a stranger that looks like Trelawny, even though he hadn't seen him for months.
- ◆If Arthur antagonizes Josiah in camp, he may say that Trelawny is a "strange man".
- ◆In the Beaver Hollow chapter, there is a very rare chance that Trelawny will try to talk to the player about Guarma.
- ◆Even before he is brought to the gang's camp at Clemens Point, his name may show up in the camp's ledger as having donated a random item.
- ◆In Saint Denis, Josiah can be heard talking to his family in an apartment. If the player calls out to him he will be surprised but tells them he will see them in “the office”.
- ◆As mentioned during his first appearance, Trelawny originally wished to go to New York, but hence his return to the western states, this did not go to plan.
- ◆In "Magicians for Sport", it's shown that Trelawny owns a walking cane; he is never seen using it, however.
- ◆"Trelawny" is an alternative spelling of "Trelawney", a Cornish surname meaning "A person from a town with a church".
- ◆There is a random camp encounter that was cut from the game in which Trelawny has a conversation with Micah Bell, during which Micah insults Trelawny by calling him first a "rat" and then a "snake". In response, Trelawny uses his magic to make a snake appear in Micah's hat, startling him. The dialogue from this encounter can be found within the game files.
- ◆Josiah, Sadie Adler, Joe, and Sean MacGuire are the only members of the Van der Linde gang to appear in Red Dead Online.
- ◆Trelawny is one of the few surviving members of the Van der Linde gang besides Orville Swanson who aren’t seen in the Epilogue.
- ◆Trelawny was supposed to have a custom short-barrel Double-action Revolver with a white grip, but it was cut.
