Avant 1898, Alden Carruthers travaille comme employé de gare à Rhodes Station pour l'U.S. Postal Service. Il connaît la ville et les routes alentour, et entretient des liens avec Josiah Trelawny et son collègue Hector Barlow. Dans Red Dead Online, Horley envoie le protagoniste récemment libéré auprès d'Alden afin d'obtenir des nouvelles d'une diligence dévalisée. Alden lui transmet la piste et lui remet un catalogue Wheeler Rawson avant qu'il ne parte à la recherche des marchandises volées.
Alden apparaît ensuite à Valentine Station, Van Horn Depot ou Annesburg Station. Depuis ces postes, il propose au protagoniste d'Online des travaux de livraison, de récupération, d'escorte et de chasse. En 1899, Arthur Morgan lui rend visite à Rhodes Station durant "Further Questions of Female Suffrage" et lui remet des lettres de Simon Pearson et Tacitus Kilgore. Alden assure également les tâches ordinaires de la gare, vendant des billets, traitant le courrier et réglant les primes.
Durant "Friends in Very Low Places", Trelawny présente Arthur à Alden et reçoit un mot au sujet de la diligence de Chester Damsen. Alden vend ensuite à Arthur d'autres informations sur des vols. Il fournit aussi des pistes durant "The Mercies of Knowledge", "The Ties That Bind Us" et "The Noblest of Men, and a Woman", et est présent lorsqu'Arthur obtient des billets pour Beau et Penelope. Après que trop de diligences ont été attaquées, Alden dissout son groupe d'"hommes découragés" et reste à Rhodes Station.
Anecdotes
- ◆Alden also appears to be affiliated with Seamus, the Fence at Emerald Ranch. In the second stagecoach robbery tip, Alden asks the player to commandeer the targeted stagecoach and deliver to his "contact", Seamus, suggesting that the two know each other.
- ◆Alden is implied to be homosexual. He seemingly flirts with the player by marking the coach robbery tips he gives with kisses in the form of the letter "x". Starting with a single "x" on the first tip, the more tips you buy from Alden in Story Mode, the number increases with each proceeding. He also talks in a stereotypically effeminate manner, which could entirely just be because of his accent and does not confirm his sexuality, yet it is noteworthy. The question of Alden's sexuality is discussed by the bartender at the Rhodes Parlour House, as he can be heard remarking, "That dandy who works at the train station sure enjoys the company of other gentlemen."
- ◆During "Friends in Very Low Places," Alden tells Trelawny "my Mrs. is a bad woman. A terrible woman." suggesting he is in a heterosexual marriage. He also outright mentions that he is a married man if you question him about the Mark Johnson bounty poster. However, this does not completely invalidate that Alden could be homosexual. Due to homosexuality being illegal at the time, many homosexuals entered into 'lavender marriages.' This term is used to describe a heterosexual marriage where one or both parties involved partook for the purpose of creating a cover story to avoid suspicion of their true orientation.
- ◆In Red Dead Online, if your character is a woman and you speak to Alden, he will get visibly uncomfortable and say he doesn't know how to talk to women. This could either be because of his homosexuality, the fact his wife is abusive or both.
