Before 1899, Mary-Beth Gaskill steals watches and wallets until several victims chase her down. The Van der Linde gang finds her during the pursuit and takes her in. By the time the gang reaches Colter, she is one of its younger members, a gentle but capable thief who can use her manner to disarm a mark. At camp she reads romance novels, writes, and helps with the daily work, treating the gang as her family.
At Horseshoe Overlook, Mary-Beth travels to Valentine with Uncle, Arthur Morgan, Karen Jones and Tilly Jackson in search of work. She uncovers information about a profitable train robbery. After Sean MacGuire returns from Blackwater, she asks Arthur to dance at the camp celebration if he is sober enough. At Clemens Point, she joins Arthur and Sean for a stagecoach robbery. She distracts the drivers while they attack, and the group shares the takings before returning to camp.
At Shady Belle, Mary-Beth speaks with Arthur about their pasts until Susan Grimshaw interrupts them with news that Tilly has vanished. She worries when Kieran Duffy later disappears after Jack Marston's return, then sees Kieran's mutilated body ride into camp during the O'Driscoll attack. His death devastates her. In Beaver Hollow, Arthur tells her that tuberculosis is killing him. She offers her sympathy and urges him to make the time he has left count.
As Dutch van der Linde's leadership becomes increasingly unstable, Mary-Beth leaves the gang with Simon Pearson, Karen and Uncle. By 1907, she writes romance novels under the name Leslie Dupont. John Marston meets her at the Valentine train station, where they discuss their lives and remember Arthur. Mary-Beth gives John a copy of The Lady of the Manor, says goodbye, and boards the arriving train.

- โIn one random conversation occurring while the gang stayed at Horseshoe Overlook, Mary-Beth told Arthur that her mother came from New Hanover.
- โAccording to her, Mary-Beth's mother died from typhoid and she had to live on her own until she met the gang.
- โIn another camp conversation with Arthur, she tells him he's "the only one of these fools who knows just how lost he is."
- โDutch can be seen flirting with Mary-Beth and asking her about her books on multiple occasions, much to Molly's dismay.
- โAmong the gang, she is the kindest to Kieran when he is captured, giving him water and treating him fairly. She engages in two additional conversations with him after "Paying a Social Call," and is later seen mourning his death.

- โOne of her outfits, in which she wears a green shirt and a maroon skirt, may have been inspired by a similar outfit worn by Diane Lane in the 1989 TV series Lonesome Dove. This is further supported by the fact that Rockstar Games listed Lonesome Dove as one of their favorite works in the Western genre on their website in 2010, even singling out Lane's performance .
