Agustin Allende is born into an impoverished Mexican family around 1858. His uncle owns a farm where Javier Escuella's father works, linking the future colonel to Escuella's past long before either man meets John Marston. Allende begins life as a radical idealist, but becomes a cynical and cruel man who takes pleasure in torture and sexual abuse. He rises through the Mexican Army to become Colonel and governor of Nuevo Paraiso under President General Ignacio Sanchez.

From Escalera, Allende rules Nuevo Paraiso for Sanchez. He seizes peasants' land, sells it to aristocrats, and forces its former owners to work it for little or no pay. Those who resist face beatings or death. His fortified villa occupies the highest ground in Escalera, where he can look over the town. He uses the Mexican Army to suppress Abraham Reyes' rebellion, while Javier Escuella works under his protection as a hired killer.

When John Marston crosses into Mexico searching for Bill Williamson and Escuella, both fugitives are already sheltered by Allende. Rather than dispose of Marston, Allende offers to hand the men over and sets out to use him against the rebels. He keeps John dependent on promises of information, directing him into the army's campaign against Reyes and his followers.

Allende has John work alongside Captain Vincente de Santa, Captain Espinoza, and Mexican Army soldiers. The colonel uses Marston's gunmanship in attacks on rebel forces, and has his men seize young women for his own personal use. John carries out these operations while Allende remains in command at Escalera, presenting cooperation with the regime as the route to Williamson and Escuella.

Allende eventually summons Marston with the claim that Williamson and Escuella have been captured and confined in a church. The promise is a trap. He has ordered De Santa to kill Marston once he arrives, but Abraham Reyes and his rebels intervene before the execution can take place. De Santa escapes, while Marston, Reyes, and the rebels kill Allende's soldiers and Captain Espinoza.

Marston then joins Reyes openly. As the rebellion gathers strength, he helps strike at Allende's army, kills De Santa, and deals with Escuella. Reyes continues to promise that he will lead Marston to Williamson. The rebels finally assault Allende's villa in Escalera, kill the soldiers defending it, and force Allende and Williamson to barricade themselves inside.

After the rebels break into the villa, Allende and Williamson flee in an armored stagecoach with three guards. Marston and Reyes pursue them from horseback, killing the guards and the driver until the coach stops. Allende surrenders, pushes Williamson out, and pins him to the ground with his foot. He offers Williamson to Marston and promises Reyes that he will leave Mexico. Either Marston or Reyes kills Allende beside the stopped coach outside Escalera.

  • โ—†It is implied that his family is of Spanish origin from his in-game dialogue and imperious attitude toward Mexico's citizens.
  • โ—†In "We Shall Be Together in Paradise", Irish says that he played cards with a Colonel who was based out of Escalera.
  • โ—†In "It is the way of mankind, a fight between two forces", Allende may be an allusion to The Communist Manifesto, written by Karl Marx and Frederich Engels in 1848. This line parallels the statement at the beginning of the first chapter: "The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles.
  • โ—†It is possible that Allende was once a communist, or at least interested in communism. He claims to have been a "radical idealist" in the past, communism being a radical, left-wing ideology.
  • โ—†His name is likely a reference to two 20th century Chilean leaders - elected Marxist president Salvador Allende and the brutal, pro-Western general Augusto Pinochet who staged a coup. Allende committed suicide, and Pinochet ruled in a military junta.
  • โ—†A pre-release artwork of Colonel Allende shows him to be originally a little different. In the artwork, he is shown a bit fatter than he is in the game. The artwork also shows that Allende's uniform originally lacked epaulets.
  • โ—†Allende owns a sabre and an armor-plated stagecoach with a Gatling Gun on the back of it. Its only appearance is in the mission "An Appointed Time".
  • โ—†Even after Allende has been killed, his portrait will still hang inside his villa, hinting that the Rebels did not decide to occupy it.
  • โ—†According to Reyes and at times random NPCs, Allende ironically used to be a poor peasant. This contrasts with Reyes, who was born wealthy and is now leading the peasants in revolution.
