Javier Escuella

Born in a village in Nuevo Paraíso, Javier grows up under a labourer father who drinks and a devout mother. After local men, including his uncle, are mutilated and killed for demanding fair pay, he turns against the order that rules Mexico. He becomes a bounty hunter and revolutionary, then kills a former army officer in Punta Orgullo over a woman. He flees north, destitute and unable to speak English, until Dutch van der Linde finds him stealing chickens in 1895 and brings him into the gang.

Javier rides in the Blackwater ferry robbery of 1899 and escapes with the gang after the job collapses into a gunfight. At Colter, he joins Arthur Morgan in searching the mountains for John Marston, carries the wounded John back to camp and fights wolves on the return. He assaults the nearby O'Driscoll camp with Lenny Summers. Once the gang reaches Horseshoe Overlook, he is caught in the Valentine saloon brawl, helps Arthur, Charles Smith and Josiah Trelawny free Sean MacGuire, and can join Arthur in robbing Chez Porter.

At Clemens Point, Javier fishes with Arthur and speaks warmly of the gang. Dutch sends him and John to arrange a horse theft with the Grays, and Arthur joins them to take the Braithwaites' horses. Javier leads the escape, only for the men to receive far less money than promised. He later rides with the gang against Braithwaite Manor after Jack Marston is taken. In Saint Denis, Javier poses as security during the riverboat robbery and escorts Arthur after Arthur wins a Reutlinger pocket watch from Desmond Blythe.

Javier survives the Saint Denis bank robbery and is stranded on Guarma with Dutch, Arthur, Micah Bell and Bill Williamson. He joins their escape from the island and their fighting alongside the local rebels. Back in America, he remains loyal to Dutch as the gang breaks apart at Beaver Hollow. When Arthur and John challenge Dutch during the final standoff, Javier stands with Dutch, Micah and Bill, though he does not aim his weapon at Arthur or John. He leaves with Dutch's side as Arthur and John escape.

By 1911, Javier has returned to Nuevo Paraíso and entered Colonel Agustin Allende's Mexican Army. John, sent by Edgar Ross to find the former gang members, crosses into Mexico while pursuing Bill. Javier supports Allende's government against Abraham Reyes and the rebels, and appears among the soldiers who oppose John. After Allende and Captain Vicente de Santa betray John at El Presidio, Reyes's men free him and join him in the assault on the fort.

After the rebels take El Presidio, John pursues Javier through the fortress. Javier tries to flee, then faces John in a final gunfight. He can be killed there, or wounded and taken alive. If John captures him, Javier is delivered to Edgar Ross and Archer Fordham as one of the outlaws Ross demanded. His path ends at El Presidio, either dead in the fighting or in federal custody.
