Dutch van der Linde

Dutch van der Linde leads his gang out of Blackwater after a ferry robbery goes wrong, leaving money behind and drawing the Pinkertons onto them. In the mountains of Ambarino, he keeps the survivors together at Colter, sends Arthur Morgan and Javier Escuella to find John Marston, and approves the robbery of Leviticus Cornwall's train. Dutch presents himself as the gang's protector, promising that one last score will finance a free life beyond the reach of the law.

At Horseshoe Overlook, Dutch directs the gang's work while pursuing money for a move west. He meets Colm O'Driscoll under a flag of truce, only for the meeting to become an O'Driscoll trap and Arthur to be taken prisoner. Dutch joins Arthur in recovering Sean MacGuire, then leads the gang from Valentine after Cornwall's men and the law close in. At Clemens Point, he courts the Gray and Braithwaite families as each side's supposed ally.

Dutch's scheme in Rhodes collapses when the Grays kill Sean and the Braithwaites take Jack Marston. He leads the gang in attacks on both families, burns Braithwaite Manor and learns that Angelo Bronte has sent Jack to Saint Denis. After recovering Jack with Arthur, John and others, Dutch works with Bronte, then turns on him after a failed trolley-station robbery. He has Bronte drowned and pursues a Saint Denis bank robbery despite Hosea Matthews's doubts.

The bank robbery ends with Hosea killed, John captured and Dutch, Arthur, Micah Bell, Bill Williamson and Javier shipwrecked on Guarma. Dutch temporarily aids the island's rebels against Alberto Fussar, helping seize a warship before the men escape back to America. At Lakay, he returns to find the gang under Pinkerton attack. Dutch moves the survivors to Beaver Hollow, where he becomes increasingly dependent on Micah and hostile to Arthur's questions.

Dutch shoots Cornwall during a confrontation at Annesburg, then becomes involved with the Wapiti Indians' fight against the Army. He supports Rains Fall's son Eagle Flies in attacks on oil fields and Cornwall's train, even as Arthur warns that Dutch is using the tribe to distract the authorities. When Eagle Flies is mortally wounded at Fort Wallace, Dutch leaves Arthur behind during their escape. He later abandons John at the train robbery, while Micah kills Susan Grimshaw and Dutch watches Arthur confront him.

Arthur exposes Micah as the Pinkertons' informer at the gang's final camp. Dutch refuses to side with Arthur or John and walks away as the Pinkertons descend on Beaver Hollow. In 1907, John, Sadie Adler and Charles Smith track Micah to his hideout on Mount Hagen. Dutch is already there with Micah's gang. He shoots Micah after the standoff, leaves the Blackwater money for John, and disappears into the mountains.

By 1911, Dutch commands a new gang in Tall Trees and uses Native American followers in raids against settlements and government interests. John, working for Edgar Ross, pursues Bill Williamson and Javier before turning his attention to Dutch. Dutch's men attack Beecher's Hope, and Dutch later confronts John during a raid at Blackwater, escaping after his gang is driven off. John and the authorities follow him into the mountains of West Elizabeth.

At Cochinay, John joins the Army assault on Dutch's mountain stronghold. Dutch's remaining men are killed as John reaches him on a cliff above the camp. Dutch rejects the world that has replaced the one he imagined and tells John that neither of them will escape it. Rather than surrender, he steps backward from the cliff and falls to his death.
