Edgar Ross

In 1899, Edgar Ross is a senior Pinkerton agent working under Andrew Milton. While Arthur Morgan fishes with Jack Marston beside the Dakota River near Horseshoe Overlook, Ross and Milton approach them. Milton offers Arthur leniency if he gives Dutch van der Linde up, but Arthur refuses. Ross later joins Milton at Clemens Point, where they offer the gang a chance to leave if it abandons Dutch. The gang rejects them again.

Ross is beside Milton during the failed Saint Denis bank robbery, when Milton captures and kills Hosea Matthews outside the Lemoyne National Bank. In Annesburg, Ross leaves a meeting with Milton and Leviticus Cornwall, who berates the agents for failing to end the Van der Linde gang. After Milton is killed, Ross commands the Pinkertons attacking Beaver Hollow. He orders his men to take Arthur, John Marston and Dutch alive, and calls on the gang to surrender.

After leaving the Pinkertons, Ross works for the National Bureau of Criminal Identification and rises to lead the Bureau of Investigation. In 1907, he and Archer Fordham find Micah Bell's body at Mount Hagen. They trace the man who killed him through Valentine and Rhodes. From a ridge above Beecher's Hope, the agents watch John Marston teaching Jack to groom a horse, identifying the former outlaw as the man they have been seeking.

In 1911, Ross has Abigail and Jack taken from John to force him into pursuing the surviving members of the Van der Linde gang. Ross and Fordham escort John to the Blackwater train station, then send him west. Once John has dealt with Javier Escuella in Nuevo Paraíso, he meets them at Ramita de la Baya. Fordham orders him to continue after Bill Williamson, while Ross makes clear that John's family remains in their custody.

After Bill and Javier are gone, Ross refuses to release the Marstons. He and Fordham require John to help find Dutch, first using Nastas as an informant and then responding to Dutch's robbery at the First National Bank of Blackwater. Ross joins an Army assault on Dutch's stronghold at Cochinay. When their armored car is disabled, he rides with Fordham, John and the cavalry to the fortress, where the soldiers fight Dutch's men.

Dutch falls from a cliff rather than submit to John. Ross arrives at the body, criticizes John for not shooting him, then fires into Dutch's corpse and takes John's pistol so the report will describe the death differently. Ross and Fordham finally tell John that Abigail and Jack are back at Beecher's Hope. They leave him there to rebuild the ranch and resume his life with his family.

Ross later returns to Beecher's Hope with U.S. Army soldiers and U.S. Marshals. His force overwhelms the ranch's defenders, killing Uncle. John sends Abigail and Jack away, then walks from the barn to face Ross's men and is shot down. Ross watches John die before leaving the body behind. In 1914, Jack tracks Ross to Lake Don Julio in Cholla Springs. Ross is fishing there with his brother Phillip. Jack confronts him in a duel and kills him.
