Player notes

In Blackwater, John Marston meets Edgar Ross and his lawmen after word reaches them that Dutch van der Linde is coming to the bank to see its manager. Ross takes John across from the bank, where Benton Manning and Dell Hopkins join the group. They climb onto the roof of the agency building and watch Dutch's gang seize people outside the bank. John uses a rifle to stop the gang members from escaping through the square and from firing out of the bank's windows.

John and the lawmen cross the courtyard and force their way into the bank. Inside, Dutch's men hold civilians at gunpoint, including hostages in the vault. John clears the lower floor and saves the captives before going upstairs after Dutch. He finds Dutch in a back room with the bank manager and Muriel Scranton. Dutch shoots Muriel and leaves through the rear of the building, taking the manager with him as John arrives too late to stop him.

John mounts up with Ross, Fordham and the marshals to pursue Dutch out of Blackwater. Dutch's gang attacks along the road while the lawmen keep after him. At Bearclaw Camp, they find Dutch's automobile burning beside the road and the bank manager dead nearby. Dutch has slipped away, but his remaining men occupy the camp. John joins Ross and the lawmen in wiping them out, and Ross holds John responsible for Dutch's escape.

Trivia

  • โ—†The article on the incidents of this mission published in The Blackwater Ledger incorrectly states that the shootout at Bearclaw Camp took place at Broken Tree.
  • โ—†Even though outdated, all the Sheriffs and Marshals use the Repeater Carbine, while Ross and Fordham use the Winchester Repeater.
  • โ—†It is revealed the Benton Manning calls his horse "Abraham" after getting on it to chase Dutch.
  • โ—†The burning automobile can be sat in if the player dismounts their horse; the right seat will set Marston on fire while the left will not. Also, the automobile is lightweight and can be pushed with one's horse.
  • โ—†The default sniper rifle in this mission is always changed to the Rolling Block Rifle even if you possess the Carcano Rifle, and the amount of ammunition you can carry with the sniper rifle is increased to 100.
  • โ—†After getting on the roof of the agency building, if the last rifle used was the Rolling Block Rifle, then it appears on Marston's back as well as in his hands.
  • โ—†According to Rockstar Games Social Club, the trophy "A Savage Soul" is unlocked after completing this mission, but it isn't. This trophy unlocked after "At Home with Dutch" mission.
  • โ—†The mission's name is a Biblical reference to Job 32:9 "Great men are not always wise; neither do the aged understand judgment".
  • โ—†The two lawmen who join you in attacking the bank are named Benton Manning and Dell Hopkins.
  • โ—†The Bank Manager's corpse can be seen next to the burning automobile.
  • โ—†Activating the invincibility cheat will allow the player to enter the burning car's passenger seat. However, the player cannot drive the vehicle.
  • โ—†Sometimes a glitch will occur in this mission during the shootout at Bearclaw Camp. If John dies, there may be a random citizen using a Repeater Carbine, fighting alongside Marston, Ross, and the Marshals, shooting at the Native Americans.
  • โ—†At the beginning of the mission, if the player goes back into the room that Edgar Ross was in, they will see a safe that Marston can crack, containing around 60 dollars. Cracking it will result in a loss of Honor, so players may wish to equip the bandana to prevent this.
