At the police station in Blackwater, John Marston asks Edgar Ross when he can see his family. Ross refuses to give him an answer, insisting that Dutch Van Der Linde must be dealt with first. Ross and Archer Fordham take John to an Army camp outside town, where soldiers prepare an armored car fitted with a Browning Gun. John climbs aboard and takes control of the weapon as the vehicle heads out with the Army.
Dutch's gang attacks the camp, and John uses the Browning Gun to cut down the attackers while the soldiers hold their ground. The surviving gang members fall back into Tall Trees. The armored car pursues them along the forest roads, with Ross, Fordham and John inside. Men from Dutch's gang fire from the rocks and throw dynamite at the vehicle, but the car keeps moving after them.
As the pursuit continues through Tall Trees, Dutch's men send a stagecoach loaded with TNT toward the armored car. John destroys it before it can reach them. The blast ahead is followed by a larger explosion that overturns the armored car. John, Ross and Fordham emerge injured from the wreck in Tall Trees.
Trivia
- โJudging by Ross' words, it can be inferred the armored car is an early design for the armored cars and eventually tanks that were used in World War I. The armored car design itself may refer to Minerva Model 1914 Belgian armored car, judging by engine deck and headlights.
- โAt the Army camp, the US flag being used is the current model instead of the flag that would have been flown at the time.
- โAt the beginning of the level (in the cutscene) you can see a picture of what appears to be the Strange Man hung up in the stairs at the police station, just like in Beecher's Hope.
- โThe title of the mission (and the one following) is most likely a reference to the Bible passage John 8:32 - "For you shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free". This is also the motto of the CIA.
- โRoss' use of the army is illegal, but since Dutch's Gang attacked their camp the ensuing conflict becomes an official military search and destroy mission.
- โFiring the gatling gun nearby the soldiers before the battle will cause them to run away in fear.
- โThe mission's loading screen image depicts John atop the armored car in front of the pier at Blackwater, but curiously the Morningstar ferry is docked behind him. In actuality, the ferry is never seen again after Exodus in America.
