Empty Promises

John Marston arrives at Colonel Allende's villa in Escalera, where Captain Vincente de Santa tells him that someone has betrayed them. De Santa insists that Marston accompany him immediately. Marston finds a horse and follows the captain to a Mexican Army wagon convoy. He dismounts beside De Santa's cart and takes the shotgun position as the convoy sets out for Torquemada.

Near Torquemada, rebels destroy the wagon ahead with TNT. They fire on the convoy from the hills to the right, and Marston returns fire from De Santa's cart. Rebel riders then charge from the same direction. Once the convoy reaches Torquemada, Mexican soldiers meet the party and provide Marston with a Rolling Block Rifle to deal with rebels positioned on the heights.

Marston shoots the rebels above the town, then advances with the soldiers toward a series of blockades. The rebels demolish the barriers and attack the army column. After the attackers are dead, Marston pushes through the valley toward the fort's ruins, facing further rebel forces as he climbs.

At the ruins, Marston fights through a larger rebel presence, including snipers posted among the fortifications. He clears the final defenders and meets De Santa at the far end of the ruins. De Santa offers him wine and women, but Marston refuses and demands information when they next meet. He remains in Torquemada.
