In his office in Blackwater, Professor Harold MacDougal tells John Marston that Nastas has arranged a meeting with men from Dutch Van der Linde's gang. The professor imagines that Native people, white men, scholars and outlaws can discuss their differences. John is less convinced, but agrees to accompany MacDougal and Nastas. The three leave Blackwater on horseback for Bearclaw Camp.

On the road to Bearclaw Camp, a grizzly bear crosses their path. MacDougal opens fire, provoking the animal and forcing John to kill it. Once the danger has passed, John follows MacDougal and Nastas onward through the countryside. They reach the camp and approach a cabin where three of Dutch's men are waiting for the proposed meeting.

The men draw their weapons despite MacDougal's attempts to present the visit as peaceful. Nastas reminds them of the agreement, but Enepay calls him a traitor and shoots him in the head. John kills Enepay and the other gunmen in the cabin. More of Dutch's gang attack from outside, and John fights his way clear while protecting the professor.

With Nastas dead, John escorts MacDougal back towards Blackwater. Dutch's men attack them twice along the route, but John drives them off each time. MacDougal survives the journey and returns to his office in Blackwater with John.
