Player notes
John Marston finds Sam Odessa north of The Scratching Post, sitting in the desert with a harmonica. Sam says he is travelling west to California, hoping to fulfil a family journey that began by the Black Sea three generations earlier and reached the Pacific with him. John warns him about the gangs and outlaws in the country, but Sam says his horse has gone lame and decides to find a stagecoach. He walks off into the desert.
Later, John meets Sam outside Cueva Seca. Sam is confused and no closer to California, despite having travelled in the wrong direction. John tries to point him west and urges him to seek help, but Sam drifts into talk of unusual horses before setting off down the road alone. When John finds him again in a ravine north of Tumbleweed, Sam's clothes are torn and his mind has deteriorated further.
Sam insists that he will still reach California. John offers to take him into town, but Sam draws his gun and forces John to back away. Sam then disappears into the desert once more. South of Tumbleweed, John finally finds him dead beside the road, his body exposed to the sun as a vulture feeds on it.
John searches Sam's body and finds a letter addressed to Sam's wife. The letter describes Sam's regret over leaving his family to pursue a dream he no longer understands, and admits that the desert has left him lost. John takes the letter to Armadillo and posts it for Sam's wife.
Trivia
- โThe appearances are separated by one to two days in-game time. If more than three days pass without the mission becoming active, save your game and load it again. The locations should appear as a purple circle on your map, which will turn to the "?" symbol as you enter them.
- โOn the second encounter with him, wolves may attack just before the player speaks to him. If shot at, the gunshots will scare Sam and he will run away.
- โIf Sam should die or if the player's gun is pointed at Sam, you will fail the current part of the mission.
- โThis Stranger mission may be a sardonic reference to the fact that the entirety of the real-life state of California is not featured in Red Dead Redemption, despite Gaptooth Ridge being inspired by Southern California and Western Arizona, and Tall Trees heavily resembling Northern California. Marston himself cannot swim past the Sea of Coronado, and the mountains surrounding New Austin are impassable, essentially making Sam's journey futile from a gameplay perspective.
- โShooting the vulture that is feasting on Sam's body is an easy way to get a kill towards the Unnatural Selection achievement/trophy. However, the player can't pick up the vulture feathers until after they have examined Sam's body.
- โSeveral of Sam's lines are references to the They Might Be Giants song "No One Knows My Plan". Examples include "I was careless, I can see that now" and "Why the dancing, why the shouting?".
- โWhen approaching Sam at the first encounter, Sam may be playing "Bury Me Not on the Lone Prairie" on his harmonica. This song is heard again after John is killed in the mission "The Last Enemy That Shall Be Destroyed."
- โThere is sometimes a random occurrence around where Sam's dead body is, usually a Damsel in Distress. This means that the vulture will probably not be on the body but the body will still be accessible once the problem is dealt with.
- โWhen you complete a part in the task after the game autosaves you can reload the autosave and the mission will become active without having to wait two to three days.
- โIf you follow Sam after the second encounter he will walk to the outskirts of Rathskeller Fork and stop there.
- โUnlike John, Jack doesn't seem to remember Sam during the third encounter.
- โDuring the second encounter, Sam makes a reference to Clever Hans, a German horse that was believed to be able to do arithmetic.
