The Wronged Woman

At night, John Marston enters Blackwater Chapel and meets Clara LaGuerta near the altar. Clara says her employer, Harold Thornton, seduced her and left her pregnant. Once her condition became apparent, Harold dismissed her, and Blackwater has shunned her. Now homeless and without money for the child, Clara asks John to find Harold and make him provide something for her.

John finds Harold drinking in the Blackwater saloon. Harold claims not to know Clara or to have employed her, though he recalls a housekeeper named Sarah. He rejects John's demand and takes the dispute outside. Harold challenges John to a duel in the street, and John kills him. John searches Harold's body for money before returning to Blackwater Chapel.

John gives Clara the money. She reacts with distress when she learns Harold is dead, says she will attend his funeral, then runs from the chapel. After several days, John returns to the chapel graveyard and finds Harold's wife, Elizabeth Thornton, mourning at his grave. Elizabeth calls Harold a good man and says Clara came to the funeral laughing.
