Bob Brownlee is an American hermit who appears in New Austin during John Marston's travels. Barefoot? No, he wears black shoes, dirty white trousers, and nothing else. His long brown hair and heavy beard have grown unchecked, while his thin frame leaves his ribs exposed. He lives alone in the open country, moving between temporary spots across New Austin rather than keeping a permanent home.
At each meeting, Brownlee faces the daylight with his arms raised and basks beneath the sun. He calls the sun the one true god and names it Helios, after the ancient Greek embodiment of the sun. When John approaches, Brownlee invites him to share in this worship. His devotion is absolute, and he treats the sun as the source of his existence.
Brownlee says that he neither eats nor drinks because sunlight gives him all the sustenance he needs. John can come across him in this state on twelve occasions as he travels through New Austin. After the twelfth encounter, Brownlee no longer appears anywhere in the region.
