Player notes
Dr. Joseph R. Barnes is a physician and surgeon who runs a clinic in Saint Denis, Lemoyne. He treats local patients and sells tonics and cures from his practice. Barnes is a brisk, practical man, yet he shows concern for those under his care. He keeps his work paid for, explaining that he has a wife and children to provide for.
While Arthur Morgan rides through Saint Denis, a violent coughing attack overwhelms him and he loses consciousness. A passer-by brings him to Barnes' clinic after he comes round. Barnes examines Arthur and diagnoses tuberculosis. He offers his condolences, injects Arthur with steroids to restore some energy, and lets him leave the clinic. Arthur later recalls Barnes' diagnosis during his final ride.
Barnes may also receive a badly injured stranger whose arm has become infected. He anaesthetises the man, removes the arm and applies a tourniquet to control the bleeding. After Arthur's diagnosis, Barnes warns him against taking on such work when Arthur brings the injured man in, telling him that he should rest.
