Joshua Brown, also known as Josh Brown and Big Josh, is an American outlaw who once works as a bounty hunter in West Elizabeth. Sheriff Farley says Brown has escaped punishment for several earlier murders, but the Big Valley sheriff's office places a $40 bounty on him after he kills several innocent people without cause. By 1899, he is wanted alive by the authorities in Strawberry.
Brown enters the story through a bounty poster available in Strawberry. Before the hunt begins, Farley warns the protagonist that Brown is dangerous and that other bounty hunters are also pursuing him. The trail leads to Beryl's Dream, an abandoned mine in Big Valley. As the protagonist searches the mine for evidence of someone living there, Brown comes up behind them and forces a duel.
Brown draws his Cattleman Revolver, but the protagonist disarms and restrains him. He is taken back across West Elizabeth to Strawberry, where Farley is surprised to see him brought in. Brown is handed over at the sheriff's office and locked in the downstairs cell.
