Dr. Malcolm MacIntosh is a Scottish scientist and author who promotes his ideas in the United States. He has written Hopes For The Future, a book he describes as the future of American science. MacIntosh believes that knowledge and scientific progress should be put to good use, and he comes to Annesburg in Roanoke Ridge, New Hanover, to persuade others to consider his views.
In the town of Annesburg, MacIntosh speaks to passersby about his work and attempts to spread the message of Hopes For The Future. He offers a copy of the book to Arthur, who may accept it. His appeal is not limited to promoting his writing. MacIntosh also argues for science and learning to be used for the benefit of people rather than harmful ends.
After Arthur reads the book, he can return to the place where MacIntosh has been speaking in Annesburg. The scientist discusses possible ideas for the book's next chapter with him. Arthur then wishes him well and departs. MacIntosh thanks him repeatedly as he goes, and, after remaining there for a while longer, MacIntosh may also leave Annesburg.
