Marko Dragic

Marko Dragic, a professor and inventor of Balkan descent, approaches Arthur Morgan in a park in western Saint Denis while preparing an experiment in the pond. He introduces a remote-controlled vessel to Mr. Marcelle and several women who may fund his work. A man interrupts to call Dragic a fraud, but Dragic dismisses him. When Marcelle doubts that the vessel is genuine, Arthur is asked to operate it. Under Dragic's direction, he guides it through mines and uses its torpedoes to sink model warships and sailboats.

Marcelle is impressed by the demonstration and agrees to discuss an investment. Dragic thanks Arthur and asks him to visit his laboratory at Doverhill, in Roanoke Ridge. When Arthur arrives there later, Dragic is exhausted but intent on completing a larger experiment. He has Arthur place electrical conductors around the building and activate the external power relay. Dragic then reveals a robot inside the laboratory and sends electricity into it. The machine briefly comes alive before its power fails, while Dragic celebrates having made something worthwhile.

Arthur leaves Dragic with the robot. On a later visit to Doverhill, he finds the inventor dead on the laboratory floor, covered in blood, and the robot missing. A note left behind concerns the machine and an Electric Lantern. The lantern's changing glow leads toward the mountains near Colter, where the robot sits alone on a peak and calls for "Papa".
