Ku Klux Klan

The Ku Klux Klan is a small white supremacist group whose members gather secretly in the wilderness of Lemoyne, West Elizabeth and New Hanover. Descended from Confederate veterans who formed the organization after the Civil War, its remaining members preach racial hatred and seek recruits through nighttime rites involving burning crosses. The story meets them only during free roam, when the protagonist comes upon their isolated assemblies.

At the first gathering, hooded Klansmen conduct an initiation beside a wooden cross. Their leader speaks against government policy and promises to restore what the group calls "supremacy and sanity." The ceremony collapses into chaos when the burning cross sets several of the men alight. The protagonist can leave them to the consequences of their own ritual or intervene against them.

A later encounter finds two Klansmen struggling to raise another cross while a third watches. They fail to control its weight, and the timber falls on the pair, killing them. At the last meeting, several members wait beside a cross for the rest of their party, growing increasingly impatient as nobody arrives.

One man tries to light the cross himself, but the fire catches his robes and spreads to another Klansman. The gathering again ends in panic and flames. The protagonist can observe the group or attack its members before leaving the wilderness.
