Player notes
John Marston receives a telegram from Sadie Adler and meets her at Smithfield's Saloon in Valentine. He finds her facing down Bubba and Jeb, two men who have been harassing her. When Bubba challenges her, Sadie drives a knife through his hand and breaks a glass over Jeb. John steps in and sends both men away before the dispute grows worse. He and Sadie catch up, recalling their time with the gang and John's past affairs.
Sadie offers John legitimate work as a bounty hunter. Her target is Nathan Kirk, a New York banker accused of stealing from his employer, who is hiding near Strawberry. John agrees, and they ride west through Big Valley. Along the way, Sadie speaks of a possible trace of Micah Bell, while John talks about his plans to buy land for Beecher's Hope and his unsuccessful attempt to make money in the Yukon.
In Strawberry, John and Sadie question locals about Kirk. The trail leads John to the Welcome Center, where the clerk identifies Kirk as the occupant of room three. John confronts him at the door, but Kirk escapes through the window and mounts a horse. John and Sadie chase him out toward Diablo Ridge. John catches Kirk alive, ties him up, and places him on Sadie's horse. Kirk insists that his wife forced him to steal the money as they discuss the bounty payment.

Trivia
- โIn the second trailer, Bubba was originally supposed to have a medium beard and a hat on his head, but his model was changed during development.
- โIt is possible to catch up with Sadie when she rides off after the mission is complete. She will never stop unless John gets attacked riding next to her, which may trigger a glitch for Sadie to become a companion in free roam despite having Nathan Kirk on horseback.
- โThe mission picture shows that Kirk had more hair instead of being bald.
- โEven if the mission "The Landowning Classes" is played before this one, John will still tell Sadie in the first cutscene that he is looking forward to buying the lands of Beecher's Hope. However, dialogue during the mission shall change depending on which mission was completed first, with John complaining to Sadie about meeting Uncle again if he already bought the land.
- โIf John stows Kirk on his horse, the cutscene would still play out normally with the latter on Sadie's horse as if the player stowed it on hers.
- โSadie will instruct John to interrogate several citizens of Strawberry for the bounty's whereabouts. If the player follows her instead she will be seen interacting with an NPC, after that the first NPC leads her to a man who is at the stables, and he finally tells Sadie where Kirk is staying, thus skipping the search section of the mission entirely.
- โIf Kirk is looted, hair pomade can be found on him even though he is bald.
