Player notes

West of Blackwater, near the Upper Montana River, John Marston finds a man writing on a mountainside. The man introduces himself as Evelyn Miller, the novelist admired by Dutch van der Linde. Miller speaks with John about his work and asks him to visit his cabin near Tanner's Reach.

At the cabin, Miller takes John to confront hunters who kill animals for sport. Along the way, John frees an animal caught in one of their traps. Miller challenges the hunters at their camp and is punched in the face. John deals with the men, then Miller thanks him before John leaves him at Tanner's Reach.

When John returns, Miller has shut himself inside the cabin to finish his draft. He says he will neither eat nor drink nor come out until it is done. John leaves food at the door on two visits. On his third return, flies and a foul smell greet him. He forces his way inside, finds Miller dead, takes the manuscript "America", and reads the writer's wish to be burned with the eagles. John sets the cabin alight with Miller's body inside and watches it burn from outside.

Trivia

  • โ—†This is the only stranger mission in Redemption 2 that is entirely exclusive to John.
  • โ—†The title is a reference to a book by Miller, The American Inferno, which can be seen next to Dutch's tent.
  • โ—†During part II, John will say "Unless you're showing me Bigfoot, you should know, I'm not so easily shocked, Mr. Miller" which is a reference to the Undead Nightmare side-mission "Birth of the Conservation Movement".
  • โ—†When he closes himself in his cabin, Miller says that he can't fight his own nature: this is part of Dutch's final apology to John.
  • โ—†If John becomes WANTED by the law before initiating the last part of the mission a glitch can occur where Miller will be standing undead in his cabin. This can continue even after the law has been lost and can be seen in the mission cutscene afterwards. A standing, moving, undead Miller can also be seen if the player starts the cutscene, reloads the game from the autosave in the middle of the cutscene, and returns directly to the cabin to start the cutscene again.
  • โ—†If the player shoots out or otherwise breaks Evelyn's windows while he is shut in his cabin, Evelyn's voice will still sound muffled.

This mission shares a wiki page with others in its chain, so page-level facts are not attributed to it.
