Hobart H. Crawley è un ex maggiore di fanteria confederato che in seguito diventa un uomo d'affari nell'alta società di Saint Denis. Durante la Civil War, guida una carica da Carmody Hills al Dakota River presso Rhodes la mattina del 30 marzo 1863. Vi prendono parte più di 3.200 soldati e Crawley sopravvive. Angelo Bronte lo definisce un eroe di Lemoyne, mentre Crawley vive ai vertici della società di Saint Denis con sua moglie, Brenda.
Durante "The Gilded Cage", Crawley partecipa alla festa del sindaco a Saint Denis. Angelo Bronte lo indica a Dutch van der Linde e Arthur Morgan, poi lo schernisce per via della giovane moglie, Brenda. Bronte afferma che il matrimonio va contro quello che considera l'ordine naturale, esponendo Crawley davanti agli invitati.
In seguito, Crawley si unisce a Dutch e Heston Jameson, il direttore di Sisika Penitentiary, in una discussione sulla legge e l'ordine. Crawley e Jameson sostengono un'autorità più severa di quella accettata da Dutch. Terminata la conversazione, Crawley fa capire chiaramente di non gradire Jameson. - ◆His disastrous charge makes him based off of major general George Pickett, though he is primarily based on William J. Behan, who was a confederate major that became a socialite and businessman active in New Orleans politics like Crawley after the war and was still alive by 1899.
- ◆He also seems to be based on lieutenant generals James Longstreet, who was also alive by 1899, and John Bell Hood, who both became insurance executives and cotton brokers in New Orleans after the war, with the ladder also being recorded as one of the prime confederate generals with extremely reckless tactics that caused high casualties among his men.
- ◆Behan and Hood were also one of the very few Confederate officers to become Republicans after the war.
- ◆It is possible that like Quincy T. Harris, Crawley was a coward who sent his men to death in a unpractical charge, which is hinted at by his "miraculous" survival at the "head" of the charge.
- ◆Though it is also possible that he did valiantly lead the charge and survived due to mere luck, as Confederate officers in real life were overwhelmingly recorded as having skill and courage in battle, even if sometimes reckless.
