A Murfree Brood é uma gangue violenta e territorial de Roanoke Ridge, em New Hanover. Descendentes da família Murfree, seus integrantes se isolam em Beaver Hollow depois que a industrialização transforma a região e passam a ser temidos por atacar viajantes, saquear acampamentos e expulsar intrusos de suas terras. Ao contrário de outras gangues de 1899, não têm uma causa política declarada. Walt Murfree é um membro conhecido.

A gangue Van der Linde encontra a Brood quando Dutch van der Linde escolhe Beaver Hollow como possível local para o novo acampamento. Ele manda Arthur Morgan e Charles Smith entrarem nas cavernas e expulsarem os ocupantes. Arthur e Charles avançam em silêncio no começo, eliminando membros da Brood, até que o alarme chama o restante da gangue. Os dois lutam por Beaver Hollow e tomam o lugar para a gangue Van der Linde.

Depois do confronto, Arthur e Charles encontram uma jovem mantida como prisioneira pela Murfree Brood. Arthur consegue acalmá-la e a tira de Beaver Hollow. Em seguida, ele a leva até Annesburg, onde ela se reencontra com a mãe. A Brood perde seu esconderijo, mas não é exterminada e continua agindo por Roanoke Ridge.

Mais tarde, membros da Murfree Brood emboscam Arthur em seu território. Em um dos ataques, eles lançam uma carroça em chamas contra ele antes de se aproximarem. Em 1907, a gangue se recompõe o bastante para retomar Beaver Hollow depois que a gangue Van der Linde foge. Ela continua ativa em Roanoke Ridge e pode atacar John Marston quando ele acampa perto de suas terras.

  • ◆Murfrees are unusually durable compared to other human NPCs, being observed surviving point-blank shotgun blasts, and in some cases even headshots with lesser firearms.
  • ◆The Murfree Brood frequently use Volcanic Pistols and Double-Barreled Shotguns, making close quarters combat with them a very deadly prospect due to the damage they deal.
  • ◆Some groups of Murfrees have custom Cattleman Revolvers and Double-Barreled Shotguns in blued steel with iron sights or trigger guards. They use a method called bluing, a passivation process in which steel is partially protected against rust using a black oxide coating. The Murfrees live in secluded areas and don't have money to buy Gun Oil to keep their weapons in good conditions.
  • ◆The Murfree Brood are quite similar to the Skinner Brothers, found in Tall Trees, West Elizabeth, and the Night Folk, found across Bayou Nwa, Lemoyne, owing to all three gangs' extreme brutality, savagery and them being more like a band of crazed serial killers than a gang of outlaws.
  • ◆The Murfree Brood have a number of similarities to Boone Helm, infamously known as the "Kentucky Cannibal"; Helm was known to be a troublesome individual, who briefly ran a six-man gang. Helm was notorious for robbing people and consuming their flesh and showing little to no remorse for his actions.
  • ◆They also draw parallels with the story of Sawney Bean, a Scottish man who was said to have been the leader of a 45-member clan in Scotland in the 16th century. The Bean Clan lived in caves, reproduced via inbreeding, and robbed travelers and locals alike, and would dismember and consume them.
  • ◆The first few times the player camps in Roanoke Ridge they will be approached by Murfrees at their campsite, who will then attempt to intimidate them into staying away from the area.
  • ◆Any horses originally in the possession of the Murfrees will be covered in various wounds and other signs of mistreatment, suggesting they either do not care for their animals or that their cruel actions extend to more than just people.
  • ◆If you go near a camp with two Murfrees looting some campers, you can overhear one of them talking about "last night" while doing a questionable gesture.
