Le Murfree Brood est un gang violent et territorial basé à Roanoke Ridge, New Hanover. Descendants de la famille Murfree, ils se retirent à Beaver Hollow après que l'industrie a transformé la région et deviennent craints pour leurs attaques contre les voyageurs, le pillage de camps et leur volonté d'éloigner les étrangers de leur territoire. Ils n'ont aucune cause politique déclarée, contrairement à plusieurs autres gangs actifs en 1899. Walt Murfree est un membre connu.
Le gang Van der Linde rencontre le Brood lorsque Dutch van der Linde choisit Beaver Hollow comme emplacement possible pour un camp. Il envoie Arthur Morgan et Charles Smith dans le réseau de grottes afin d'en chasser les occupants. Arthur et Charles progressent d'abord discrètement dans le creux, tuant des membres du Brood avant que l'alerte n'amène le reste du gang sur eux. Ils se battent à travers Beaver Hollow et en prennent le contrôle pour le gang Van der Linde.
Après la fusillade, Arthur et Charles découvrent une jeune femme retenue prisonnière par le Murfree Brood. Arthur la calme et la fait sortir de Beaver Hollow. Il l'emmène ensuite à Annesburg, où elle retrouve sa mère. Le Brood perd sa cachette, mais ses membres ne sont pas tous éliminés et continuent d'opérer autour de Roanoke Ridge.
Plus tard, des membres du Murfree Brood tendent une embuscade à Arthur sur leur territoire, notamment lors d'une attaque où ils lancent une charrette en feu vers lui avant de l'encercler. En 1907, le gang s'est suffisamment rétabli pour reprendre Beaver Hollow après le départ du gang Van der Linde. Ils restent actifs à Roanoke Ridge et peuvent attaquer John Marston lorsqu'il campe près de leur territoire.
Anecdotes
- ◆Murfrees are unusually durable compared to other human NPCs, being observed surviving point-blank shotgun blasts, and in some cases even headshots with lesser firearms.
- ◆The Murfree Brood frequently use Volcanic Pistols and Double-Barreled Shotguns, making close quarters combat with them a very deadly prospect due to the damage they deal.
- ◆Some groups of Murfrees have custom Cattleman Revolvers and Double-Barreled Shotguns in blued steel with iron sights or trigger guards. They use a method called bluing, a passivation process in which steel is partially protected against rust using a black oxide coating. The Murfrees live in secluded areas and don't have money to buy Gun Oil to keep their weapons in good conditions.
- ◆The Murfree Brood are quite similar to the Skinner Brothers, found in Tall Trees, West Elizabeth, and the Night Folk, found across Bayou Nwa, Lemoyne, owing to all three gangs' extreme brutality, savagery and them being more like a band of crazed serial killers than a gang of outlaws.
- ◆The Murfree Brood have a number of similarities to Boone Helm, infamously known as the "Kentucky Cannibal"; Helm was known to be a troublesome individual, who briefly ran a six-man gang. Helm was notorious for robbing people and consuming their flesh and showing little to no remorse for his actions.
- ◆They also draw parallels with the story of Sawney Bean, a Scottish man who was said to have been the leader of a 45-member clan in Scotland in the 16th century. The Bean Clan lived in caves, reproduced via inbreeding, and robbed travelers and locals alike, and would dismember and consume them.
- ◆The first few times the player camps in Roanoke Ridge they will be approached by Murfrees at their campsite, who will then attempt to intimidate them into staying away from the area.
- ◆Any horses originally in the possession of the Murfrees will be covered in various wounds and other signs of mistreatment, suggesting they either do not care for their animals or that their cruel actions extend to more than just people.
- ◆If you go near a camp with two Murfrees looting some campers, you can overhear one of them talking about "last night" while doing a questionable gesture.
